1200 × 800Brush: drag to paint
How to use the Online Paint
- Pick a tool from the toolbar: Brush, Pencil, Eraser, Line, Rectangle, Ellipse, Fill, Text or Eyedropper. Keyboard shortcuts are shown in each tooltip.
- Choose a color and size: click a swatch or the color box, then drag the Size and Opacity sliders.
- Draw on the canvas with mouse, pen or finger. Hold Shift to draw straight lines at 45° steps, perfect squares or circles.
- Fix mistakes with Undo and Redo, or Clear to start over. Use New canvas to change the size or pick a transparent background.
- Save your picture with Download PNG (keeps transparency) or Download JPG.
Which paint tool should I use?
| Tool | Key | Best for | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brush | B | Freehand drawing, sketching, handwriting | Strokes are smoothed with curves, so quick movements still look clean. |
| Pencil | P | Pixel art, crisp 1 px outlines | Draws hard-edged square pixels with no anti-aliasing; use size 1 on a small canvas such as 64 × 64. |
| Eraser | E | Removing paint | On a transparent canvas it erases to transparency; otherwise it paints the background color. |
| Line, Rectangle, Ellipse | L, R, O | Diagrams, frames, simple shapes | Hold Shift for 45° lines, squares and circles. Choose Outline or Filled. |
| Fill bucket | F | Coloring in closed areas | Shapes must be closed, or the fill leaks out through gaps. Raise the tolerance if a light halo remains along the edges. |
| Text | T | Labels and captions | Shift+Enter starts a new line, Enter places the text, Esc cancels. |
| Eyedropper | I | Reusing a color from the picture | After picking, the previous tool is selected again. |
PNG or JPG: which format to save?
PNG is lossless: every pixel is kept exactly, flat colors and sharp lines stay crisp, and transparent areas are preserved. It is the right choice for drawings, diagrams, pixel art and anything you will edit again. JPG uses lossy compression that is designed for photographs. It makes files much smaller when you have painted on a photo, but it can add faint blocky artifacts around hard edges and it does not support transparency, so transparent areas become white.
Tips for cleaner drawings
- Draw big, export once. A larger canvas (for example 1920 × 1080) gives smoother curves; you can shrink the PNG later with an image resizer without losing quality.
- Use opacity for shading. At 20 to 40% opacity each stroke is applied as one even layer, so overlapping strokes build up tone gradually like a marker.
- Coloring pages: open a line drawing, choose the fill bucket with a tolerance around 40 to 60, and click inside each area.
- Undo is generous: dozens of steps are kept, including New canvas and Clear, so experiment freely.
Frequently asked questions
Is this online paint app free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limits. Everything runs in your browser, so your drawings and any images you open are never uploaded.
Can I draw on top of a photo?
Yes. Press Open image, drop a picture on the canvas or paste one with Ctrl+V. The canvas takes the size of the image (large photos are scaled to at most 4000 pixels on the long side) and you can paint, add shapes or text on top of it.
How do I save my drawing?
Press Download PNG to save a lossless PNG, which also keeps transparent areas, or Download JPG for a smaller file with a white background. Your current drawing is also saved automatically in this browser and restored the next time you open the page.
How do I make a transparent background?
Press New canvas and choose Transparent as the background. The eraser then removes paint to transparency, and the PNG download keeps the transparent pixels. On a white canvas the eraser paints white instead.
What does the fill tolerance do?
The fill bucket fills the clicked area and every connected pixel with a similar color. Tolerance sets how different a pixel may be and still be filled: 0 fills only the exact same color, while around 30 also fills the soft anti-aliased edges next to lines.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. You can draw with your finger or a stylus. Touching the canvas draws instead of scrolling; scroll the page by touching outside the canvas.
What are the keyboard shortcuts?
B brush, P pencil, E eraser, L line, R rectangle, O ellipse, F fill, T text, I eyedropper, [ and ] change the size, Ctrl+Z undo, Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z redo.
