Remove a white, black or any solid-color background and save the result as a transparent PNG. Click the picture to pick the color, adjust tolerance and edge softness, and clean up scanned signatures and line art with the color-to-alpha mode.
Tip: click the picture to pick the exact color you want to remove.

How to use the Make Image Transparent
Add an image: drop it on the box, paste it with Ctrl+V, or press Choose image. A sample logo is loaded so you can try it first.
Pick a preset: Auto background, White, Black, Signature / scan or Green screen. Auto reads the most common color along the edges.
Click the picture to sample the exact color you want to remove, or type a hex code.
Fine-tune Tolerance until the background disappears, and raise Edge softness for smoother edges. Switch the preview background to check for halos.
Download PNG or copy the image. Tick Trim empty edges to crop away the transparent border.
Tolerance cut vs. color to alpha
The tool offers two ways to decide how transparent each pixel becomes:
Tolerance cut measures how far each pixel's color is from the color you picked, using a brightness-weighted RGB distance (30 % red, 59 % green, 11 % blue, the same weights used for luma). Pixels within the tolerance become fully transparent, pixels beyond tolerance + softness stay fully opaque, and pixels in between fade smoothly. This is ideal for logos, icons, product shots on white and green-screen footage.
Color to alpha treats every pixel as a mix of the background color and an unknown foreground color, and finds the lowest opacity that explains it. Paper becomes fully transparent while faint pencil lines, ink strokes and anti-aliased edges become partly transparent instead of being cut off. It is the best choice for signatures, stamps, handwriting and scanned drawings.
With Clean color fringes switched on, semi-transparent pixels are "un-mixed": for opacity a and background color B, the stored color is (pixel − (1 − a) × B) ÷ a. This removes the light or dark halo that usually appears when a cut-out is placed on a different background.

Tips
Logo or icon on white
White or Auto
Keep "Only background touching the edges" on so white details inside the logo stay solid.
Signature on paper
Signature / scan
Raise Tolerance to remove paper texture; lower Edge softness for darker, bolder ink.
Text or diagram screenshot
Auto
Turn off edge-only mode so the insides of letters such as "o" and "e" also become transparent.
Green screen photo
Green screen
Click the green area to sample its exact shade, then adjust Tolerance.
Dark background
Black
Preview on white to make sure no dark fringe is left.
Tips for a clean result
Start low: raise Tolerance step by step until the background disappears; too high and the subject starts to fade.
Uneven lighting: photos of paper often have shadows. Use Color to alpha, or click the darkest part of the background to sample it.
JPG artifacts: compressed images have noisy edges. A little Edge softness hides the noise.
Need a smaller file? Tick Trim empty edges so the PNG contains only the visible part.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make the white background of an image transparent?
Load the image and press the White preset (or Auto background). Pixels close to white become transparent. If some white is left around the subject, raise Tolerance a little; if parts of the subject disappear, lower it or keep Only background touching the edges switched on.
Why do I see a white halo around my object?
Edge pixels are a blend of the object and the old background. Keep Clean color fringes on edges switched on: it subtracts the background color from semi-transparent edge pixels. Previewing on the dark background makes any remaining halo easy to spot.
What is the best way to make a signature transparent?
Scan or photograph the signature on plain paper, load it and choose Signature / scan. It uses a color-to-alpha method that turns the paper fully transparent while keeping the soft, anti-aliased ink strokes. You can also recolor the ink, for example to dark blue, and trim the empty edges.
Will this remove a busy photo background?
No. This tool removes one solid or near-solid color. For people, pets and products on a busy background, use an AI background remover instead. Plain studio, white, black or green-screen backgrounds work well here.
Why must I save as PNG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas would turn white or black. PNG keeps a full alpha channel, including partly transparent edge pixels, and is supported everywhere.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser with the Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
