Give any photo the soft background of a portrait-mode camera. An AI model running in your browser separates the person, pet or product from the background, then you choose how strong the blur is, soften the edges and touch up the selection with a brush. The photo never leaves your device.

How to use the Blur Photo Background
Add a photo by dropping it in, choosing a file or pasting with Ctrl+V. A demo picture is shown until then.
Wait for the subject detection. The first time, the AI model (about 40 MB) is downloaded and cached by your browser.
Set the blur strength and edge feather until the result looks natural. Optionally darken the background or make it black and white.
Refine if needed: choose the Keep sharp brush to add missed parts of the subject or the Blur brush to blur areas that should not be sharp. Mask view shows the selection.
Download the photo as JPG or PNG.
How the portrait-mode effect is made
Phone cameras fake a shallow depth of field by estimating which pixels belong to the subject and blurring everything else. This tool does the same in four steps, all in your browser:
Segmentation. An image segmentation neural network (the same kind used by background removers) produces a mask: white for the subject, transparent for the background.
Normalized background blur. The subject is cut out and only the background is blurred. Each blurred pixel is divided by the blurred mask coverage, so the colors of the person do not smear into the background and no bright or dark halo appears around them.
Feathering. The mask edge is softened by a few pixels so hair and outlines blend naturally instead of looking cut out.
Composite. The sharp subject is placed on top of the blurred background. Optional brightness and black-and-white settings apply only to the background.
Getting a natural result
Match the blur to the scene. A real lens blurs distant backgrounds much more than a wall right behind the subject. Use 30 to 50 for indoor portraits and 60 or more for outdoor shots with a far background.
Do not over-feather. An edge feather of 2 to 5 looks like a camera; higher values create a glow.
Fix the ground plane. The floor directly under feet or a table under a product would be sharp in a real photo. Paint it with the Keep sharp brush for realism.
Use color pop sparingly. A black-and-white background with a colored subject is eye-catching for thumbnails and posters.
Need the subject on a transparent or plain background instead? Use the Background Remover. To blur only faces or license plates, try Blur Image.
Frequently asked questions
How does the background blur work?
First an image segmentation model estimates which pixels belong to the main subject. The background is then blurred with the subject removed (a normalized blur), so the subject's colors do not leak into it, and finally the sharp subject is placed back on top with softly feathered edges.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model is downloaded once to your browser and runs on your own device with WebAssembly. The photo itself is never sent anywhere.
Why does the first photo take longer?
On first use the browser downloads the segmentation model, roughly 40 MB. It is cached afterwards, so later photos are processed in a few seconds depending on your device.
The edges around the hair look wrong. What can I do?
Increase Edge feather a little for a softer transition, and use the Keep sharp brush with a small size to add strands that were missed. Use the Blur brush to remove background areas that stayed sharp.
What if the AI model cannot load?
If the model cannot be downloaded, for example on a blocked network, the tool starts with a rough subject area in the center of the photo. Paint over your subject with the Keep sharp brush and the rest of the photo is blurred.
What resolution is the result?
Photos are processed with the longest side up to 2048 pixels, which suits social media, profile pictures and screens. Larger photos are scaled down to that size to keep the tool fast and memory-friendly.
