Online Speed Reader
Paste an article, email or chapter and read it one word at a time in a fixed spot, with the focus letter highlighted so your eyes never move. Set the speed from 100 to 1000 words per minute, flash 1 to 4 words at once, and pause or rewind any time.

How to use the Online Speed Reader
- Paste your text into the Text to read box, open a .txt file, or use the sample text.
- Set your speed. Start near 250 to 300 WPM, which is close to normal reading speed.
- Press Start reading (or the Space bar) and keep your eyes on the red focus letter.
- Pause or rewind whenever you lose the thread: press Space, use « 10, or drag the progress bar. Turn on Show sentence when paused for context.
- Speed up gradually by 25 to 50 WPM once a pace feels comfortable, and try 2 words per flash for lighter texts.
How the timing works
At a speed of W words per minute, each word gets a base display time of 60,000 ÷ W milliseconds: 200 ms at 300 WPM, 100 ms at 600 WPM. When you flash several words at once, the chunk stays on screen for the sum of their base times, so the overall speed is the same. With smart pauses on, the reader adds extra time on top of the base:
| Situation | Extra time | At 300 WPM |
|---|---|---|
| Word ends with a comma, colon, semicolon or dash | +0.5 × base | +100 ms |
| End of a sentence (. ! ?) | +1.25 × base | +250 ms |
| End of a paragraph | +2 × base | +400 ms |
| Word with 9 to 12 letters | +0.3 × base | +60 ms |
| Word with 13 or more letters | +0.6 × base | +120 ms |
The time left shown under the progress bar includes these pauses, so it is an accurate estimate for your current settings.
Tips for reading faster with RSVP
- Fix your eyes on the guide. The thin marks above and below the word point at the red letter. Do not chase the word edges.
- Increase speed in small steps. Raise it by 25 to 50 WPM when the current speed feels easy, and drop back if you notice you are no longer following the meaning.
- Read in short sessions. RSVP reduces blinking for some people. Reading in blocks of 5 to 10 minutes and looking away between them keeps your eyes comfortable.
- Match the speed to the text. Light reading works well at high speed; textbooks, contracts and anything with numbers are better at a normal pace.
Frequently asked questions
What is RSVP speed reading?
RSVP stands for rapid serial visual presentation. Instead of moving your eyes along lines of text, words are flashed one after another in the same place. This removes the eye jumps (saccades) and accidental re-reading that take up part of normal reading time.
What is the red letter in each word?
It marks the optimal recognition point, the spot slightly left of a word's middle where the eye recognizes a word fastest. The tool keeps that letter at the same position for every word, so your eyes can stay still.
What speed should I start with?
Most adults read regular text silently at roughly 200 to 300 words per minute. Start there, then raise the speed in small steps. Many people follow 400 to 500 WPM comfortably after a little practice; above that, comprehension of new or complex material usually drops.
Does speed reading hurt comprehension?
It can. Research on RSVP shows comprehension falls as speed rises, especially for dense text, because you cannot glance back. Use high speeds for easy material such as news or emails, and slow down or pause for anything you need to understand in depth.
Why does the actual pace feel slower than the WPM setting?
With Pause at punctuation and Slow down on long words turned on, the reader adds short breaks after commas, sentences and paragraphs and gives long words more time. This improves understanding. Turn both off to read at exactly the set speed.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The text never leaves your browser. It is saved in your browser's local storage so you can continue where you stopped, and you can clear it at any time with the Clear button.
