Tips for clear invitations
Put the most important facts on their own lines: who, what, when, where, and RSVP. Guests scan invitations.
Say who is invited if it matters ("Adults only, please" or "Kids welcome!") using the extra line.
For a surprise party, add the time guests should arrive, not the time the guest of honor arrives.
Who the party is for, what is being celebrated, the date, start time (and end time if it matters), the place with an address, who is hosting and how and by when to RSVP. Add a dress code, gift note or details like parking only when guests need them.
How do you write the date on a formal invitation?
Formal invitations spell everything out: "Saturday, the twentieth of June, two thousand twenty-six, at four o'clock in the afternoon." Numbers and abbreviations are avoided, and "half past four" is used for 4:30. Casual invitations simply say "Saturday, June 20 at 4 pm".
How do I politely say no gifts?
Keep it short and warm, for example "Your presence is the only gift requested" (formal) or "No gifts, please. Your company is the best present" (casual). A charity donation line is a kind alternative if guests will want to give something.
When should invitations be sent?
As a rule of thumb, send party invitations 3 to 4 weeks ahead, shower invitations 4 to 6 weeks ahead and wedding invitations 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Set the RSVP date about 1 to 2 weeks before the event, or 3 to 4 weeks for a wedding, so you can confirm numbers.
What is the difference between "honor of your presence" and "pleasure of your company"?
Traditionally, "the honor of your presence" is used for a wedding ceremony held in a house of worship, while "the pleasure of your company" is used for receptions, parties and ceremonies held elsewhere. Both are correct in modern invitations.
Can I edit the wording?
Yes. Copy any option and change it in your card design tool, email or document. Every option is built only from the details you typed, so you can also tweak the form and the wording updates instantly.
