Turning a random result into a real character
Find the contradiction. A "compassionate" mercenary or a "cautious" thrill-seeker is instantly interesting. Re-roll traits until two of them pull in different directions.
Connect motivation and hook. Ask how the backstory hook created the motivation.
Give the flaw a history. Write one sentence about the moment the flaw began.
Write a scene. Put the character in a small, everyday situation and let the quirk and traits show through action and dialogue.
Quick character formula
[Name], a [trait] [occupation], wants [motivation], but [flaw], and must face [fear] when [backstory hook]. Fill it in with any generated character to get a one-line story pitch.
Frequently asked questions
What is a random character generator used for?
Writers use it to break writer's block, fill a story with supporting characters or find an unexpected protagonist. Game masters use it to create NPCs on the fly, and teachers use it for creative writing prompts. Treat each result as a starting point you can change.
Why does every character have a flaw and a motivation?
A motivation (what the character wants) and a flaw (what gets in the way from inside) are the engine of most stories. Conflict between the two creates choices, mistakes and growth, which makes a character feel real rather than perfect.
Can I keep some details and change others?
Yes. Press the lock icon next to any field to keep it, then press Generate character again. Locked fields stay, everything else is re-rolled. Unlock all clears every lock.
Are the names real?
Contemporary, mystery and historical names are real given names and surnames from many cultures. Fantasy, science fiction and western names are chosen to suit the genre; some are invented, others are real names with the right feel.
How many different characters can it make?
With hundreds of names, about 50 personality traits, 30 flaws, 25 motivations, 25 quirks and genre-specific occupations and hooks, the number of combinations runs into the billions, so you will rarely see the same character twice.
Can I use the characters in my book or game?
Yes. The characters are randomly assembled from generic building blocks and are free to use in any project, commercial or not.
Is anything saved online?
No. Characters are generated in your browser, and your saved cast is stored only in this browser's local storage.
