How to use the Acrostic Poem Generator
Type a name or word, for example a friend's name, a season or a school subject.
Choose a theme and whether each line should be a short phrase or a single describing word, then click Generate poem.
Fine-tune the lines. Click ↻ next to a line for a new suggestion, or type your own words into the box.
Style the card: pick a design, alignment and whether to show a title and bold first letters.
Copy, print or download the finished poem as a PNG picture for a card, a classroom display or social media.
How to write a great acrostic poem
Choose a meaningful word. A person's name, a season, a pet, a holiday or a value such as HOPE works best. Short words (3 to 8 letters) make the strongest poems.
Brainstorm first. Write down words and images you connect with the subject before you start: how it looks, sounds, feels and why it matters to you.
Let each line describe the subject. Every line should say something about the word you are spelling, not just start with the right letter.
Mix lengths and add detail. Combine a short punchy line with a longer one, and use specific details (“Grandma's recipes”) rather than general ones (“good food”).
Read it aloud. Check the rhythm, swap any weak line with ↻, then personalize it with your own words.

Variations of the acrostic form
Classic acrostic: the first letters of each line spell the word (what this generator makes).
Mesostic: the word runs down the middle of the lines instead of the start.
Telestich: the last letters of each line spell the word.
Double acrostic: both the first and last letters spell words.
Abecedarian: the lines start with the letters of the alphabet in order, A to Z. Type ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ into the generator to try it.
Frequently asked questions
What is an acrostic poem?
An acrostic poem is a poem in which the first letter of each line spells out a word, name or message when read from top to bottom. The word is usually also the subject of the poem, so a poem for MOM describes mom, and the letters are often written in bold or color.
How do I make an acrostic poem with a name?
Type the name into the box, pick a theme such as friendship or love, and the generator writes one line for each letter. Choose Single words if you want describing words like Kind, Amazing, Thoughtful for each letter, which is a popular name-poem style in schools.
Do acrostic poems have to rhyme?
No. Acrostic poems rarely rhyme; the only rule is that the first letters spell the word. You can add rhyme by editing the lines if you like, and the Rhyme Finder tool can help.
What words start with X for an acrostic poem?
X is the hardest letter. Common tricks are X marks the spot, xylophone, xenial (friendly to guests) and X-ray. Some poets use a word containing x, such as eXcited or eXtra, and capitalize the X, which you can do by editing the line.
Can my child use this for school homework?
Yes. The themes and words are family-friendly and the school theme was written with classroom topics in mind. It is best used for ideas: let your child pick and rewrite lines in their own words, then print the poem.
Can I save the poem as a picture?
Yes. Click Download image to save a PNG of the poem card in the selected style, ready to share or print. You can also print it directly or copy the plain text.
