Frequently asked questions
What counts as a hashtag?
A hashtag is a # followed by letters, numbers or underscores, with no spaces or punctuation. It must contain at least one letter, so #2026goals is a hashtag but #1 is not, which matches how the major social networks treat numbers-only tags. A # in the middle of a word or inside a URL (such as page#section) is ignored.
What counts as a mention?
A mention is an @ followed by a username made of letters, numbers, underscores and dots, up to 30 characters, which covers the username rules of Instagram, X (Twitter), TikTok and Threads. Dots at the end of a sentence are not included. An @ preceded by a letter or number, as in an email address, is not treated as a mention.
Are #Travel and #travel the same hashtag?
On Instagram, X and TikTok hashtags are not case sensitive, so #Travel and #travel lead to the same tag page. That is why the tool merges case variants by default and shows the most common spelling. Untick 'Merge case variants' to count each spelling separately.
Can I extract hashtags in other languages?
Yes. Hashtags may contain letters from any script, such as #café, #東京 or #привет, plus accent marks and digits. Mentions are limited to Latin letters, numbers, underscores and dots because that is what usernames allow on the major platforms.
What are cashtags?
Cashtags are a $ followed by a stock ticker of one to six letters, such as $AAPL or $BRK.B, used to tag posts about a company on X and StockTwits. The option ignores dollar amounts like $5 or $19.99.
How many hashtags should I use?
Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post, X recommends one or two, and on most platforms a few relevant, specific tags work better than a long generic list. Use the frequency counts here to see which tags you or your competitors actually rely on.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The extraction runs in JavaScript in your browser. Your text is only remembered in this browser's local storage so it is still there when you return.
