Monogram rules in short
- One person, three letters: first initial, large last-name initial, middle initial (E C R for Emily Rose Carter).
- Same-size letters: written in normal order, first-middle-last (ERC).
- Two letters: first and last initial, both the same size (EC).
- Couples: often the shared last-name initial in the middle with each partner's first initial on either side; build those by hand with the letters this tool gives you.
Tip: before printing or engraving, read the letters aloud. Some combinations spell unintended words, and changing the order or dropping the middle initial is an easy fix.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write initials with periods?
In American English initials of a person's name usually take a period after each letter, with a space between them in running text (J. R. R. Tolkien) or without spaces in some styles (J.R.R. Tolkien). Choose J. F. K. or J.F.K. as the format. Well-known people referred to only by initials often drop the periods entirely (JFK).
What is the correct monogram order?
A traditional three-letter monogram for one person puts the first-name initial on the left, the last-name initial larger in the center and the middle-name initial on the right. Emily Rose Carter becomes E C R with a large C. If all letters are the same size, the usual order is simply first, middle, last (ERC).
Are middle names included?
Yes by default, so John Fitzgerald Kennedy gives JFK. Untick Include middle names to get only first and last initials (JK).
How are names like Ludwig van Beethoven handled?
Lowercase particles such as van, von, de and da can be skipped (LB), kept as a lowercase letter (LvB) or treated like any other word (LVB). Pick the convention you prefer.
What about hyphenated first or last names?
With the hyphen option on, each part of a hyphenated name gives its own initial, so Jean-Luc Picard becomes J.L.P. Turn it off to get J.P.
Can it convert a whole list at once?
Yes. Paste one name per line and every line is converted. Turn on Show the full name to get “name, initials” rows that paste straight into a spreadsheet, or download the table as CSV.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The initials are generated in your browser and the names never leave your device.
