Hashtag limits and tips by platform
Platform
Limit
Practical advice
Instagram
30 per post
Use relevant tags only; mix a few broad tags with medium and niche ones. Captions and Reels both support hashtags.
TikTok
No fixed hashtag limit (counts toward the caption length)
3 to 5 targeted tags, including a community tag such as #booktok or #foodtok.
YouTube
More than 60 and all are ignored
The first three hashtags in the description can appear above the title. Use #shorts context naturally.
X (Twitter)
No fixed limit
X recommends no more than two hashtags per post.
LinkedIn
No fixed limit
Three to five professional hashtags at the end of the post.
Facebook
No fixed limit
One to three; hashtags matter less here than on other networks.
Why mix broad, medium and niche hashtags?
A hashtag page shows the newest and the most engaging posts. On a broad tag like #food, thousands of new posts push yours down within minutes. On a niche tag like #weeknightdinner, fewer people post, so your post stays visible longer, and the people browsing it are more likely to care about exactly what you share. Medium tags sit in between. Using all three gives a post several chances to be found.
In this tool, the tiers are estimated from how general a tag is (a single broad word versus a specific phrase). They are not live post counts.
Hashtag best practices
Relevance beats volume. A tag that does not describe the post brings the wrong audience and can hurt engagement.
Avoid spam tags such as follow-for-follow and like-for-like tags. They attract bots, not followers.
Rotate your sets. Pasting the exact same 30 tags on every post looks automated. Use Shuffle to get variations.
Use CamelCase for readability in multi-word tags (#LatteArt instead of #latteart). It also helps screen readers. Hashtags are not case-sensitive.
Add a branded or local tag (your business name or city) with Add your own so customers can find all your posts.
Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post, but a smaller set of highly relevant tags usually works better. X recommends no more than two per post. On YouTube, the first three hashtags in the description can show above the title, and if a video has more than 60 hashtags YouTube ignores all of them. TikTok has no fixed hashtag limit, but three to five targeted tags are common.
What is the difference between broad, medium and niche hashtags?
Broad hashtags like #travel are used by huge numbers of posts, so your post is visible there only briefly. Niche hashtags like #solotravelwomen have fewer posts but a more interested audience. A mix gives you both reach and a chance to stand out. The tiers here are estimates based on how general each tag is, not live post counts.
Where do the hashtags come from?
The tool uses built-in curated lists for more than 30 topics plus tags derived from your own keywords (for example #coffeelover from coffee). Everything runs in your browser, so it is instant and private, but it cannot show live trends or post counts.
Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?
Both work on Instagram. The caption is simplest and keeps the tags tied to the post; the first comment keeps the caption clean. On TikTok, YouTube, X and LinkedIn, put them in the caption or description.
Are banned hashtags a risk?
Some hashtags get restricted by a platform because of spam or abuse, and posts using them may get less reach. The built-in lists leave out follow-for-follow style spam tags and tags widely reported as restricted, but platforms change their lists without notice, so search a tag in the app if a post performs unusually badly.
Can I add my own hashtags?
Yes. Type extra tags in the Add your own box and press Add. They are added to the selection and included when you copy.
