Mix up the letters in every word, keep the first and last letters in place for that “can you still read this?” effect, or shuffle the word order of each sentence. Teachers can switch to the worksheet maker to print a word scramble puzzle with an answer key.

Tips for classroom word scrambles
Use 8–15 words from the current topic or spelling list; younger children do best with 4–6 letter words.
Turn on “First letter given” for beginners, or “Number of letters” for a medium challenge.
UPPERCASE letters avoid giving away the first letter through capitalization.
Frequently asked questions
Can people really read words with scrambled middle letters?
Often, yes, for short and familiar words when the first and last letters stay in place, an effect sometimes called typoglycemia. Research shows it does slow reading down, and it gets much harder with long words or when the scramble changes the word’s shape a lot.
How does the scrambler shuffle letters?
It uses the Fisher–Yates shuffle with your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so every arrangement is equally likely. If the shuffle happens to return the original word, it shuffles again.
Why are some words not scrambled?
Words shorter than the minimum length you choose (3 letters by default) stay as they are. In keep-first-and-last mode a word needs at least 4 letters, and words made of one repeated letter cannot change.
How do I make a word scramble worksheet?
Open the Worksheet maker tab, type a title and up to 60 words, choose UPPERCASE or lowercase and an optional hint, then click Print worksheet. You can also download it as a text file to paste into a document.
Is the answer key included?
Yes, if “Include answer key” is ticked. On screen it appears below the puzzle, and when printed it starts on a new page so you can keep it separate.
Can I unscramble words with this tool?
This tool scrambles. To solve a scrambled word, use the Word Unscrambler, which finds every real word that can be made from a set of letters.
