Frequently asked questions
How does the random word generator pick words?
It collects every word that matches your filters and then picks from that list with your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), so every matching word has the same chance of being chosen. With No repeated words on, it shuffles the list and takes the first words.
Where do the words come from?
The Common words list is a hand-picked set of about 1,000 everyday English nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs that are easy to read and draw. The Full dictionary uses an English word list of roughly 100,000 words, including rare and technical words.
Can I get only nouns, verbs or adjectives?
Yes. Set Type of word to Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives or Adverbs. Word types are known for the Common words list; some words such as dance or brush can be both a noun and a verb.
How are syllables counted?
Syllables are estimated from the spelling by counting vowel groups and adjusting for silent endings such as a final e. The estimate is right for most everyday words but can be off by one for unusual words.
What can I use random words for?
Popular uses include drawing and charades prompts, creative writing and story starters, vocabulary and spelling practice, naming ideas, brainstorming, and picking words for word games.
Why do I get fewer words than I asked for?
With No repeated words switched on, the tool cannot return more words than match your filters. Loosen the filters, switch to the Full dictionary, or allow repeats.
