ACoS formulas
ACoS = ad spend ÷ ad sales × 100
ROAS = ad sales ÷ ad spend = 1 ÷ ACoS
Break-even ACoS = profit margin before ad costs
Target ACoS = margin before ads − desired profit margin
Profit after ads = ad sales × margin − ad spend
TACoS = ad spend ÷ total sales (ad + organic) × 100
Example: a product sells for $25 and costs $7 to make, $8.50 in marketplace fees and $1.50 in packaging and shipping, leaving $8 or a 32% margin. A campaign spends $250 and brings $1,000 in sales: ACoS = 25%, ROAS = 4.0x. Gross profit on those sales is $320, so the campaign nets $70. To keep 10% profit the ACoS must stay at or below 22%.

Lowering ACoS without losing sales
Cut search terms that spend without converting and add them as negative keywords.
Lower bids on keywords above break-even, and raise them carefully on terms well below target.
Improve the listing: better images, title and reviews raise conversion rate, which lowers ACoS at the same cost per click.
Raise your margin. A higher price or lower unit cost lifts break-even ACoS, giving campaigns more room.
Watch TACoS over time. A campaign slightly above break-even can still be worth it if it lifts organic ranking and total sales.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate ACoS?
ACoS (advertising cost of sale) = ad spend ÷ ad sales × 100. If you spend $250 on ads and they generate $1,000 in sales, ACoS is 25%.
What is break-even ACoS?
Break-even ACoS equals your profit margin before advertising costs. If a product sells for $30 and you keep $9 after product cost, fees and shipping, your margin is 30%, so any ACoS below 30% is profitable and anything above it loses money on ad-driven sales.
How do I convert ACoS to ROAS?
ROAS = 1 ÷ ACoS (with ACoS as a decimal). An ACoS of 25% equals a ROAS of 4.0, and an ACoS of 50% equals a ROAS of 2.0. Going the other way, ACoS = 1 ÷ ROAS × 100.
What is a good ACoS?
A good ACoS is one below your break-even ACoS, leaving the profit you want. There is no universal number: a product with a 60% margin can be profitable at 40% ACoS, while one with a 20% margin loses money above 20%. Launch campaigns sometimes run above break-even on purpose to gain reviews and ranking.
What is TACoS?
TACoS (total advertising cost of sale) = ad spend ÷ total sales, including organic sales. A falling TACoS while ad spend stays steady suggests ads are helping organic sales grow.
What should go into the margin before ads?
Subtract everything you pay per unit except advertising: product cost, marketplace referral and fulfillment fees, inbound shipping, packaging and an allowance for returns. The remainder divided by the selling price is your pre-ad margin.
