    Common title page mistakes

    • Writing "Running head:" before the shortened title. That label was removed in APA 7.
    • Making the title too long or vague. Aim for a focused title that states the main topic and variables.
    • Adding Dr., PhD or other degrees to the author byline. Degrees belong only in some professional author notes, never in the byline.
    • Using a separate font size or single spacing on the title page. The title page follows the same font and double spacing as the rest of the paper.
    • Labeling the first page of text "Introduction". Instead, repeat the paper title in bold at the top of page 2.

Always check your instructor's or publisher's instructions, which take priority over the general APA rules.

    Frequently asked questions

What goes on an APA 7 student title page?

The paper title in bold, the author name(s), the affiliation (usually department and university), the course number and name, the instructor's name and the assignment due date, all centered and double-spaced. A page number goes in the top right corner. A running head is not required for student papers unless your instructor asks for one.

What is the difference between a student and a professional title page?

A professional title page, used for manuscripts submitted for publication, adds a running head and an author note and leaves out the course, instructor and due date. A student title page includes the course details and normally has only a page number in the header.

Where does the title go on an APA title page?

Place the title three or four double-spaced lines below the top margin, centered and in bold, using title case. Add one blank double-spaced line between the title and the author names. A long title can run onto two lines.

How do I write the running head in APA 7?

The running head is a shortened version of the title, in all capital letters, flush left in the page header, with the page number flush right. It can be at most 50 characters including spaces and punctuation. APA 7 dropped the words "Running head:" from the label.

How do I list multiple authors on an APA title page?

Put the names on one line: two authors are joined with "and", and three or more are separated by commas with "and" before the last one. If authors have different affiliations, put superscript numbers after each name and before each matching affiliation.

Which fonts and sizes does APA 7 allow?

APA 7 accepts several readable fonts, including Times New Roman 12 pt, Georgia 11 pt, Calibri 11 pt, Arial 11 pt and Lucida Sans Unicode 10 pt. Use the same font throughout the paper, with 1-inch margins and double spacing.

    What is APA title case?

Capitalize the first word of the title and of any subtitle, every word of four letters or more, and all major words such as nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns. Short minor words of three letters or fewer, like and, of, in, the and to, stay lowercase unless they start the title or subtitle.
