- Check the split-area note for codes that cover two time zones, such as parts of Florida, Indiana or Texas.

Area codes split between time zones
- Florida 850 / 448: Pensacola and Panama City are Central; Tallahassee is Eastern.
- Indiana: 219 (northwest) and the Evansville corner of 812 / 930 are Central; most of the state is Eastern.
- Kentucky and Tennessee: the line runs through 270 / 364, 606, 423 and 931.
- Plains states: western South Dakota (605), southwest North Dakota (701), the Nebraska Panhandle (308) and a few Kansas counties (620, 785) are Mountain.
- The West: northern Idaho (208 / 986) is Pacific, most of Malheur County, Oregon (541 / 458) is Mountain, and El Paso (915) is Mountain while the rest of Texas is mostly Central.
- Canada: northwest Ontario (807, Kenora area) is Central and parts of eastern British Columbia are Mountain.
Tips before you call
- Overlays share a region: a new code like 945 (Dallas) or 628 (San Francisco) covers the same area as the older code, so the time zone is the same.
- Business hours: 9 AM in New York is 6 AM in Los Angeles, so call the West Coast after noon Eastern time to reach people during their workday.
- Daylight saving: most of the US and Canada switch on the second Sunday of March and back on the first Sunday of November, which briefly changes the gap with Arizona, Hawaii and Saskatchewan.
- Unexpected codes: check unfamiliar numbers before calling back; some +1 codes belong to Caribbean countries and are billed internationally.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the time zone of an area code?
Enter the 3-digit area code (or a full phone number) in the box. The tool looks it up in its list of North American area codes and shows the state or province, time zone and the current local time there.
Can an area code be in more than one time zone?
Yes. Area codes follow geography and some cross time zone lines. Examples include 850 in Florida (Central in Pensacola, Eastern in Tallahassee), 812 in Indiana (Central around Evansville) and 541 in Oregon (Mountain in most of Malheur County). The tool flags these and shows both local times.
Is a phone number's area code always where the person is?
No. Mobile numbers keep their area code when people move, and internet phone numbers can be issued anywhere. Use the result as a likely location and time, not a guarantee.
What time zone are 800 and 888 numbers in?
None. 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888 are toll-free codes that can ring anywhere in North America, so they aren't tied to a time zone.
Which area codes don't use daylight saving time?
Arizona (480, 520, 602, 623, 928, except the Navajo Nation), Hawaii (808), Saskatchewan (306, 639, 474), Yukon (867), Puerto Rico (787, 939) and the U.S. territories stay on standard time all year.
Why does an area code like 876 look domestic but isn't?
Several Caribbean countries, such as Jamaica (876) and the Dominican Republic (809, 829, 849), share the +1 calling code with the US and Canada. Calls to them are international even though they dial like a US number; the tool tells you when a code belongs to one of these countries.
How current is the area code list?
It reflects the North American Numbering Plan assignments in service as of 2025. New overlay codes are added every year; if a code isn't found it may be newly activated or unassigned.
