Arizona time zone explained
Arizona sits in the Mountain Time Zone, but most of the state stays on Mountain Standard Time (MST, UTC−07:00) all year. Arizona used daylight saving time in 1967 and then exempted itself under the Uniform Time Act from 1968 onward. Hawaii is the only other US state that does not change its clocks.
Because Arizona stands still while its neighbours move, it effectively changes “partners” twice a year: in winter it shows the same time as Denver, Salt Lake City and Albuquerque; in summer it shows the same time as Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Diego. The Navajo Nation in the northeast corner of the state does use daylight saving time (America/Denver), while the Hopi Reservation surrounded by it does not, so in summer you can cross a time change several times on one drive along Highway 264.

Tips for scheduling with Arizona
- Use the city, not “Mountain Time”: calendar apps set to “Mountain Time” switch to MDT in summer. Choose Phoenix (America/Phoenix) so meetings stay correct.
- Recurring meetings: a weekly call with Arizona will move by an hour for you twice a year if you live somewhere that changes clocks, even though Arizona's time does not.
- Navajo Nation travel: tour times at places like Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon may follow Navajo or Arizona time; check which one the booking uses.
- Beat the heat: with summer sunrise before 5:30 AM, early-morning hikes are the norm; daytime temperatures in Phoenix often top 105 °F in July.
Frequently asked questions
What time zone is Arizona in?
Arizona is in the Mountain Time Zone but stays on Mountain Standard Time (MST, UTC−7) all year. The IANA zone for most of the state is America/Phoenix. The Navajo Nation in the northeast is the exception and follows America/Denver.
Does Arizona observe daylight saving time?
No, except for the Navajo Nation. Arizona tried daylight saving time in 1967 and the state chose to exempt itself starting in 1968. In a hot desert climate, an extra hour of evening sun would mean more air-conditioning, not less.
Is Arizona on the same time as California?
From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, yes: Arizona's MST (UTC−7) equals California's PDT. In winter, when California is on PST (UTC−8), Arizona is 1 hour ahead of California.
Is Arizona on the same time as Denver?
In winter, yes, because both are on MST. In summer Denver moves to Mountain Daylight Time (UTC−6), so Arizona is 1 hour behind Denver, Salt Lake City and Albuquerque.
Does the Navajo Nation use a different time?
Yes. The Navajo Nation, including Window Rock, Tuba City and Kayenta, observes daylight saving time, so in summer it is 1 hour ahead of Phoenix. The Hopi Reservation, which lies inside the Navajo Nation, does not observe it. Check your phone's automatic time setting when driving through the area.
What is the time difference between Arizona and New York?
Arizona is 2 hours behind New York in winter and 3 hours behind in summer, when New York moves to Eastern Daylight Time and Arizona does not change.
What time is it at the Grand Canyon?
Grand Canyon National Park, including the South Rim and North Rim, follows Arizona time (MST, no daylight saving). Pick Grand Canyon Village in the sunrise menu to see sunrise and sunset times for the South Rim.
