EST to PST conversion table
The gap between the coasts is fixed at 3 hours, so the same table works in winter (EST to PST) and summer (EDT to PDT). Late-evening Eastern times fall on the same Pacific date; after midnight Eastern, Pacific is still on the previous day.

How to convert Eastern to Pacific time
Subtract 3 hours: PT = ET − 3 h. If the Eastern time is before 3:00 AM, the Pacific time is on the previous day (1:30 AM ET on Tuesday is 10:30 PM PT on Monday). Behind the scenes the converter turns your Eastern wall-clock time into UTC using the offset in force on that date (−5 h in winter, −4 h in summer), then applies the Pacific offset (−8 h or −7 h).
Tips for East-to-West scheduling
- Morning East Coast meetings are too early in the West. A 9:00 AM ET call is 6:00 AM PT. Aim for 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM ET.
- Write “ET/PT” in invites instead of EST/PST so the label is right in both winter and summer.
- TV and live events: national broadcasts at 8:00 PM ET air live at 5:00 PM PT; many networks run a separate West Coast feed so prime time still starts at 8:00 PM local.
- Daylight saving 2026–2028: clocks spring forward on March 8, 2026, March 14, 2027 and March 12, 2028, and fall back on November 1, 2026, November 7, 2027 and November 5, 2028.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours is EST ahead of PST?
Eastern time is 3 hours ahead of Pacific time all year. EST (UTC−5) is 3 hours ahead of PST (UTC−8), and EDT (UTC−4) is 3 hours ahead of PDT (UTC−7), because both zones change their clocks on the same dates.
What is 9 AM EST in PST?
9:00 AM Eastern is 6:00 AM Pacific. Subtract 3 hours from any Eastern time to get Pacific time: noon ET is 9:00 AM PT and 5:00 PM ET is 2:00 PM PT.
Should I say EST or EDT in summer?
From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, the East Coast is on EDT and the West Coast on PDT. Many people still write EST and PST all year; writing ET and PT avoids the mistake. The converter shows the correct label for the date.
Is the difference ever not 3 hours?
Only for about three hours on the two nights the clocks change. Each zone switches at 2:00 AM local time, so the East changes three hours before the West. In March the gap is briefly 4 hours, and in November briefly 2 hours. The converter handles this automatically.
When do working hours overlap between ET and PT?
With a 9-to-5 day on both coasts, the shared hours are 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM Eastern, which is 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM Pacific. That five-hour window is the easiest time for cross-country meetings.
What time does the stock market open in Pacific time?
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq trade from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern, which is 6:30 AM to 1:00 PM Pacific.
Which states use Pacific time?
California, Washington, Nevada and most of Oregon use Pacific time, along with northern Idaho. Arizona is not on Pacific time; most of it stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, so in summer it matches Pacific Daylight Time.
