Indian Standard Time (IST) explained
India has one time zone, Indian Standard Time, UTC+05:30, with no daylight saving time. The reference longitude of 82.5° E runs near Mirzapur and Prayagraj, roughly through the middle of the country. Before national standard time took over, cities such as Bombay and Calcutta kept their own local times; Calcutta Time was dropped in 1948 and Bombay Time in 1955.
Because the country is wide, the sun rises much earlier in the northeast than in the west under the same clock. That is why some people in Assam and other northeastern states have proposed a separate, earlier time zone; officially, IST still applies everywhere.
