UTC to EST Converter
Convert Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, also called Zulu time) to US Eastern Time. The converter subtracts 5 hours in winter (EST) or 4 hours in summer (EDT), using the correct rule for the exact date you enter.

How to use the UTC to EST Converter
- Read the live clocks: the current UTC and EST times update every second, with the active abbreviation and UTC offset.
- Enter a time in UTC or tap a quick time such as 9 AM, then pick the date (it defaults to today).
- Press Convert to see the EST time, whether it lands on a different day and the exact offset used on that date.
- Check the 24-hour table to see every hour of the chosen date side by side, with shared 9-to-5 working hours highlighted.
- Swap direction to convert the other way, switch between 12-hour and 24-hour format, or copy the result and download the table as CSV.
UTC to Eastern time formula
US Eastern Time is defined as an offset from UTC: EST = UTC − 5 hours and EDT = UTC − 4 hours. In 2026 Eastern Time is on EDT from March 8 at 07:00 UTC to November 1 at 06:00 UTC, and on EST outside those dates (in 2027 the switch dates are March 14 and November 7). UTC itself never changes for daylight saving, which is why it is the standard for aviation, servers, logs and scientific data.
Because the result is earlier than UTC, any UTC time before 04:00 (summer) or 05:00 (winter) falls on the previous calendar day in Eastern time. The converter labels this as “previous day”.

Working with UTC timestamps
- ISO 8601: a timestamp ending in Z or +00:00, such as 2026-11-02T14:30:00Z, is UTC. The same moment written in Eastern time is 2026-11-02T09:30:00-05:00.
- Military and aviation: 1430Z is 14:30 UTC, which is 9:30 AM EST or 10:30 AM EDT.
- Software: store times in UTC and convert to Eastern only for display, using a time zone name (America/New_York) rather than a fixed −5 offset, so daylight saving is handled for you.
- Scheduled events: an event at 16:00 UTC moves on the Eastern clock twice a year (11 AM EST in winter, 12 PM EDT in summer) while staying fixed for the rest of the world.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert UTC to EST?
Subtract 5 hours when Eastern Time is on standard time (EST, early November to mid-March) and 4 hours when it is on daylight time (EDT, mid-March to early November). For example, 15:00 UTC is 10:00 AM EST in January or 11:00 AM EDT in July.
Is EST UTC−5 or UTC−4?
EST itself is always UTC−5. In summer the Eastern zone switches to EDT, which is UTC−4. Many people say EST all year, so check the date: this converter picks the right offset automatically.
What is 00:00 UTC in Eastern time?
Midnight UTC is 7:00 PM EST or 8:00 PM EDT on the previous day. That is why many daily resets and log rotations that happen at midnight UTC appear in the evening on the US East Coast.
What does Z mean in a timestamp like 2026-07-04T18:00:00Z?
The Z (Zulu) means the time is in UTC. 18:00Z on July 4 is 2:00 PM EDT in New York.
Is UTC the same as GMT?
For converting times, yes: UTC and GMT both have a zero offset. Strictly, UTC is the atomic-clock standard and GMT is the time zone the UK uses in winter, so use the GMT to EST converter if you mean London time.
Why does my server log show a time 4 or 5 hours ahead?
Servers usually log in UTC. If you are on the US East Coast, the log time is 5 hours ahead of you in winter and 4 hours ahead in summer. Paste the time into this converter to read it as local time.
