Time Zone Map
Explore the world's time zones on a live, color-coded map. Click a country or the ocean to see its time zone, the current local time, its UTC offset and exactly when its clocks change this year.

How to use the Time Zone Map
- Read the colors: each color is a UTC offset; the legend under the map lists every offset in use right now.
- Click a country (or hover on a computer) to see its time zone name, local time, UTC offset and difference from you.
- Check daylight saving: the panel shows the exact dates when clocks go forward or back this year, if the zone uses DST.
- Highlight an offset: click a chip in the legend or table to light up every region on that offset.
- Compare seasons: change the date to January or July, or tick “Color by standard offset” to see the map without daylight saving.
Major time zones at a glance
Offsets below are standard (winter) time; places marked with DST move one hour ahead during their summer.

Why offsets change during the year
About 70 countries use daylight saving time (DST). In the Northern Hemisphere the clocks move forward in spring (March or April) and back in autumn (October or November); in the Southern Hemisphere it is the other way round. Because countries switch on different dates, the difference between two cities can change by an hour for a few weeks each year. For example, New York is normally 5 hours behind London, but for about three weeks in March it is only 4 hours behind, because the United States starts DST on the second Sunday in March and the UK on the last Sunday in March. Use the date box above the map to see how the colors change between January and July.
Frequently asked questions
How many time zones are there in the world?
There are 24 one-hour zones in theory, but in practice about 38 different UTC offsets are in use, from UTC−12:00 to UTC+14:00, including half-hour offsets such as India's UTC+05:30 and 45-minute offsets such as Nepal's UTC+05:45. The IANA time zone database, which computers use, has over 400 named zones because it also records each region's history and daylight saving rules.
Why don't time zones follow straight lines?
Time zones are set by governments, so they usually follow country, state or province borders rather than lines of longitude. Large countries may choose one zone for the whole nation (China uses UTC+08:00 across about 60° of longitude), while others are split into several zones, like the United States, Canada, Russia, Brazil and Australia.
What is the difference between UTC and GMT?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the modern time standard, kept by atomic clocks. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is the time zone of the United Kingdom in winter and is, for everyday purposes, the same as UTC+00:00. Time zones are described as offsets from UTC, for example UTC−05:00 for New York in winter.
How accurate are the zone boundaries on the map?
Country borders and the time zone of each country are accurate. Inside countries that have more than one zone, the map splits the country by nearest reference city, so internal boundaries are approximate. The time, offset and daylight saving information in the panel always come from the official IANA time zone database built into your browser.
Which places use half-hour or 45-minute offsets?
Current examples include India and Sri Lanka (UTC+05:30), Iran (UTC+03:30), Afghanistan (UTC+04:30), Myanmar (UTC+06:30), Nepal (UTC+05:45), central Australia (UTC+09:30), Newfoundland in Canada (UTC−03:30 in winter) and the Chatham Islands of New Zealand (UTC+12:45). They are drawn with stripes on the map.
Where does the date change?
The International Date Line roughly follows 180° longitude through the Pacific. Places just west of it, such as Kiribati's Line Islands (UTC+14:00), are the first to start a new day, and places just east of it, such as American Samoa (UTC−11:00), are among the last. The difference across the line can be up to 25 hours.
What are the nautical time zones over the ocean?
On the high seas, ships traditionally use zones exactly 15° of longitude wide, each one hour apart and centred on multiples of 15° (UTC±0 is centred on Greenwich). The map shades them in alternating blue bands, labeled along the bottom edge.
