Frequently asked questions
When does daylight saving time start and end in the US?
Since 2007, DST in the United States and most of Canada starts on the second Sunday in March at 2:00 AM local time, when clocks jump to 3:00 AM, and ends on the first Sunday in November at 2:00 AM, when clocks go back to 1:00 AM. In 2026 that is March 8 and November 1.
When do the clocks change in the UK and Europe?
In the UK and the EU clocks go forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October, all at 01:00 UTC. That is 1:00 AM in London, 2:00 AM in Paris and 3:00 AM in Athens. In 2026 the dates are March 29 and October 25.
When is daylight saving time in Australia and New Zealand?
In New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, Tasmania and South Australia, DST runs from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April. New Zealand's runs from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory don't change clocks.
Do I lose or gain an hour?
In spring the clocks go forward one hour, so you lose an hour of sleep (spring forward). In autumn they go back one hour and you gain an hour (fall back).
Which places don't observe DST?
In the US, Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year, as do Puerto Rico and other territories. Most of Saskatchewan in Canada, Queensland, WA and the NT in Australia, and most countries near the equator, as well as Japan, China, India and, since 2022, most of Mexico, do not change clocks.
Is daylight saving time being abolished?
There have been proposals, such as the EU Parliament's 2019 vote to end seasonal clock changes and the US Sunshine Protection Act, but as of this tool's last update none has taken effect. The dates shown follow the current rules; check official sources if the law changes.
