Philippine time zone explained
All of the Philippines, from Batanes to Tawi-Tawi, runs on Philippine Standard Time, UTC+08:00, and the country does not use daylight saving time. The official time is kept by PAGASA, and the Philippine Standard Time Act of 2013 (Republic Act 10535) asks offices, schools and broadcasters to set their clocks to it, which is why you may see TV channels show “PST” on screen.
Because the islands stretch from about 117° E (Palawan) to 126° E (eastern Mindanao), the sun does not reach its highest point at the same clock time everywhere. In Manila solar noon is close to 12:00, while in Davao, much further east, the sun is highest roughly 15 to 20 minutes earlier. You can see this in the sunrise times above by switching between Manila and Davao City.

Tips for calling or working with the Philippines
- Calling family from the US: US evenings are Philippine mornings of the next day; US mornings are late evenings in Manila.
- Working with US teams: many Philippine contact centers and remote teams work night shifts so their hours overlap the US business day. A 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM New York shift during daylight saving time runs from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM in Manila.
- Europe: late afternoon in Manila overlaps the London morning; 4:00 PM in Manila is 8:00 AM in London in winter and 9:00 AM in summer.
- Write the zone clearly: because “PST” also means US Pacific time, write “PHT” or “Manila time (UTC+8)” in invites.
Frequently asked questions
What time zone is the Philippines in?
The whole country uses Philippine Standard Time, UTC+8 (IANA zone Asia/Manila). It is often abbreviated PHT; the official name is Philippine Standard Time, abbreviated PST, which should not be confused with US Pacific Standard Time.
Does the Philippines use daylight saving time?
No. The Philippines stays on UTC+8 all year, so the clock in Manila never jumps. The time difference to the US and Europe changes only when those places switch to or from daylight saving time.
How many hours ahead is the Philippines from the US?
Manila is 12 hours ahead of New York during Eastern Daylight Time (March to November) and 13 hours ahead during Eastern Standard Time. It is 15 hours ahead of Los Angeles in summer and 16 hours ahead in winter, and 18 hours ahead of Hawaii all year.
Who keeps the official time in the Philippines?
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) maintains Philippine Standard Time. The Philippine Standard Time Act of 2013 (Republic Act 10535) requires government offices and broadcasters to synchronize their clocks with it.
Is the Philippines the same time as China and Singapore?
Yes. China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Perth in Western Australia all use UTC+8 too, so they show the same clock time as Manila all year.
What is a good time to call the Philippines from the US?
Evenings in the US work best. 8:00 PM in New York during daylight saving time is 8:00 AM the next day in Manila, and 6:00 PM in California during daylight saving time is 9:00 AM the next morning in Manila.
Are the sunrise and sunset times exact?
They are calculated with the NOAA solar equations for the selected city and are usually within a minute of published tables. Mountains and buildings can delay the visible sunrise by a few minutes, especially in Baguio.
