How to use the GMT to EST Converter
- Read the live clocks: the current GMT and EST times update every second, with the active abbreviation and UTC offset.
- Enter a time in GMT or tap a quick time such as 9 AM, then pick the date (it defaults to today).
- Press Convert to see the EST time, whether it lands on a different day and the exact offset used on that date.
- Check the 24-hour table to see every hour of the chosen date side by side, with shared 9-to-5 working hours highlighted.
- Swap direction to convert the other way, switch between 12-hour and 24-hour format, or copy the result and download the table as CSV.
GMT to Eastern time formula
EST = GMT − 5 hours and EDT = GMT − 4 hours. GMT itself (UTC+0) never changes, so the only thing to check is whether the US East Coast is on standard or daylight time on your date: EDT runs from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November.
London is different. The UK uses GMT only in winter and moves to BST (UTC+1) from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. Because the US changes earlier in spring and later in autumn, London and New York are 5 hours apart most of the year but only 4 hours apart for a few weeks. In 2026 that happens from March 8 to March 29 and from October 25 to November 1.
| Period (2026) | UK clock | US Eastern clock | London ahead of New York by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 1 – Mar 7 | GMT (UTC+0) | EST (UTC−5) | 5 hours |
| Mar 8 – Mar 28 | GMT (UTC+0) | EDT (UTC−4) | 4 hours |
| Mar 29 – Oct 24 | BST (UTC+1) | EDT (UTC−4) | 5 hours |
| Oct 25 – Oct 31 | GMT (UTC+0) | EDT (UTC−4) | 4 hours |
| Nov 1 – Dec 31 | GMT (UTC+0) | EST (UTC−5) | 5 hours |

Tips for UK–US East Coast timing
- The overlap is short: a London 9-to-5 day (9 AM–5 PM GMT) overlaps New York only from 9 AM to 12 PM Eastern, so schedule transatlantic calls in the London afternoon.
- Broadcasts: a UK football match kicking off at 3 PM in London is usually on at 10 AM in New York.
- Say which GMT you mean: if a British colleague writes “2 PM GMT” in July, they almost always mean 2 PM UK time (BST), which is 9 AM EDT, not 10 AM.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours is GMT ahead of EST?
GMT is 5 hours ahead of EST. When US Eastern Time is on daylight saving time (EDT, mid-March to early November), GMT is 4 hours ahead. So 3:00 PM GMT is 10:00 AM EST in winter or 11:00 AM EDT in summer.
Is London 5 hours ahead of New York?
Most of the year, yes. The UK and US change their clocks on different dates, so for about two to three weeks in March and one week around late October and early November, London is only 4 hours ahead. Tick Use UK local time to see these periods in the year table.
What is the difference between GMT and BST?
GMT (UTC+0) is UK winter time. British Summer Time (BST, UTC+1) runs from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. If someone in London quotes a time in summer, it is usually BST, not GMT.
Should I use GMT or UK time in this converter?
Use plain GMT for aviation, shipping, scientific or server times written as GMT or UTC. Use UK local time when the time comes from someone in the UK, such as a meeting, broadcast or event in London.
What is 12:00 GMT in EST?
12:00 GMT (noon) is 7:00 AM EST in winter or 8:00 AM EDT when the US is on daylight saving time.
Is GMT the same as UTC?
They show the same clock time and are used interchangeably in everyday conversion. UTC is the formal atomic time standard; GMT is also the name of the UK's winter time zone.
