How the conversion works
ET = PT + 3 h. The converter first turns your Pacific wall-clock time into UTC with the offset that applies on that date (UTC−8 for PST, UTC−7 for PDT), then shows that moment in New York time (UTC−5 for EST, UTC−4 for EDT). Because both zones follow the same US daylight saving rules (second Sunday in March to first Sunday in November, since 2007), the answer is 3 hours apart except for a few hours on changeover nights.
Working West to East
- Your afternoon is their evening. A 3:00 PM PT message reaches the East at 6:00 PM ET, after most offices close. Send important requests before 2:00 PM PT.
- Deadlines stated in ET (for example “5:00 PM ET”) mean 2:00 PM PT. Federal and financial cut-offs often use Eastern time.
- Red-eye flights leaving the West at 10:00 PM PT and flying about five hours land around 6:00 AM ET because three hours are added on arrival.
- Arizona is different: most of Arizona keeps Mountain Standard Time all year, so in summer it shows the same time as Pacific, and in winter it is one hour ahead of Pacific.
Frequently asked questions
What is PST to EST?
Add 3 hours. Pacific time is always 3 hours behind Eastern time, so 10:00 AM PST is 1:00 PM EST and 4:00 PM PDT is 7:00 PM EDT.
What is 10 AM PST in EST?
10:00 AM Pacific is 1:00 PM Eastern. In summer the same answer applies: 10:00 AM PDT is 1:00 PM EDT.
What is 9 PM PST in EST?
9:00 PM Pacific is 12:00 midnight Eastern, and any Pacific time from 9:00 PM onwards is already the next day on the East Coast. 11:00 PM PT on Friday is 2:00 AM ET on Saturday.
Is PST the same as PDT?
No. PST is Pacific Standard Time, UTC−8, used from early November to mid-March. PDT is Pacific Daylight Time, UTC−7, used the rest of the year. Most of the year it is technically PDT, even when people say PST.
When should someone on the West Coast schedule a call with the East Coast?
Between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM Pacific, which is 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM Eastern. Earlier than that and you are calling before the East Coast lunch; later and the East Coast office day is over.
What time is the US stock market open in Pacific time?
Regular trading runs 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern, so West Coast traders see the opening bell at 6:30 AM PT and the close at 1:00 PM PT.
Do both coasts change clocks at the same moment?
No. Each switches at 2:00 AM local time, so the East Coast changes three hours earlier. For those three hours the gap is 4 hours in March and 2 hours in November. The converter shows the exact offset for any date and time.
