Frequently asked questions
How many time zones does the United States have?
Nine standard time zones are defined in US law: Atlantic (Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands), Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska, Hawaii-Aleutian, Samoa and Chamorro (Guam, Northern Mariana Islands). The 48 contiguous states use four of them: Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific.
Which states are in two time zones?
Fourteen states cross a time zone boundary: Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas (Nevada only at West Wendover, which is why lists often say 13). Most of each state uses one zone and a smaller area uses the neighboring zone; click a state on the map for the details.
Does Arizona have daylight saving time?
No. Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time (UTC−7) all year, so in summer it has the same clock time as California, and in winter the same as Colorado. The exception is the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona, which does observe daylight saving time; the Hopi Reservation inside it does not.
Which US states do not observe daylight saving time?
Hawaii and most of Arizona do not. The territories of Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa also stay on standard time all year.
When do US clocks change?
Daylight saving time starts at 2:00 a.m. local time on the second Sunday in March, when clocks move forward one hour, and ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday in November, when they move back. The panel shows the exact next change date for each zone.
What is the time difference between Eastern and Pacific time?
Pacific time is 3 hours behind Eastern time all year, because both zones switch to daylight saving time on the same dates. When it is noon in New York it is 9:00 a.m. in Los Angeles, 11:00 a.m. in Chicago and 10:00 a.m. in Denver.
How accurate are the times shown?
Times come from your device clock and the official IANA time zone database built into your browser, which includes current US daylight saving rules. The split-state descriptions are summaries; time zone boundaries follow county and sometimes local lines set by the US Department of Transportation.
