How to use the CST to EST Converter
- Read the live clocks: the current CST and EST times update every second, with the active abbreviation and UTC offset.
- Enter a time in CST or tap a quick time such as 9 AM, then pick the date (it defaults to today).
- Press Convert to see the EST time, whether it lands on a different day and the exact offset used on that date.
- Check the 24-hour table to see every hour of the chosen date side by side, with shared 9-to-5 working hours highlighted.
- Swap direction to convert the other way, switch between 12-hour and 24-hour format, or copy the result and download the table as CSV.
Central to Eastern: the formula
EST = CST + 1 hour, and in summer EDT = CDT + 1 hour. Central Standard Time is UTC−6 and Eastern Standard Time is UTC−5, a difference of exactly one hour. Both zones spring forward on the second Sunday of March and fall back on the first Sunday of November, so the rule is the same year-round.
Watch for the day boundary: any Central time from 11:00 PM to 11:59 PM becomes 12:00 to 12:59 AM Eastern on the next date. The converter shows “next day” whenever this happens.
A common source of confusion is that CDT and EST are both UTC−5. So a summer time in Chicago (CDT) equals a winter time in New York (EST), but the two never apply at the same moment, except for one hour on the autumn change night.

Where Central time is used
Central Time covers much of the US Midwest and South, including Chicago, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Minneapolis, Kansas City, St. Louis, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans and Oklahoma City, and in Canada Winnipeg and most of Manitoba. Saskatchewan uses CST all year without daylight saving, so in summer it matches Mountain Daylight Time rather than CDT.
- Booking calls with the East Coast: if you want to finish by 5 PM Eastern, the latest one-hour slot starts at 3 PM Central.
- Online launches and sales announced for “midnight ET” start at 11 PM Central the evening before.
- Flights: arrival times on tickets are always in the local time of the destination airport, so add the hour yourself when estimating how long a trip feels.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CST to EST?
Add 1 hour. 8:00 AM CST is 9:00 AM EST, 3:30 PM CST is 4:30 PM EST, and 11:30 PM CST is 12:30 AM EST on the next day. In summer the same rule converts CDT to EDT.
Is Eastern time ahead of or behind Central time?
Eastern is ahead. When it is noon in Chicago it is already 1:00 PM in New York, because the sun rises earlier further east.
What does 8/7c mean?
It is TV listing shorthand for a program that airs at 8 PM Eastern and 7 PM Central. Pacific viewers usually get a delayed feed at 8 PM local time, so check local listings.
Do CST and EST both use daylight saving time?
Yes. Both switch on the second Sunday in March (to CDT and EDT) and back on the first Sunday in November, so the difference remains 1 hour except for one hour on each change night.
What is 5 PM CST in EST?
5:00 PM CST is 6:00 PM EST. A Central-time employee finishing at 5 PM is finishing an hour after their Eastern colleagues.
What is the UTC offset of CST?
Central Standard Time is UTC−6. Central Daylight Time (CDT), used from March to November, is UTC−5, which equals Eastern Standard Time.
