Sydney time zone explained
Sydney keeps Australian Eastern Time. For about half the year the city is on AEST (UTC+10:00); from the first Sunday in October until the first Sunday in April it moves to AEDT (UTC+11:00) for daylight saving. Because Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, daylight saving covers the Australian summer, the opposite season to the United States and Europe.
Australia has no single national time. New South Wales (Sydney), the Australian Capital Territory (Canberra), Victoria (Melbourne) and Tasmania (Hobart) all follow the same rules, so they always match Sydney. Queensland (Brisbane) stays on AEST all year, South Australia (Adelaide) uses UTC+9:30 with daylight saving, the Northern Territory (Darwin) stays on UTC+9:30, and Western Australia (Perth) stays on UTC+8. Lord Howe Island, also part of New South Wales, uses UTC+10:30 and only moves its clocks by 30 minutes in summer.

Tips for calling or meeting with Sydney
- From the US West Coast: late afternoon in California (around 3 PM to 5 PM) is the next morning in Sydney, which is usually the easiest overlap.
- From the US East Coast: early evening in New York (around 5 PM to 7 PM) reaches Sydney the next morning.
- From London: early morning in the UK (around 7 AM to 9 AM) catches the end of the Sydney working day.
- Watch the switch weeks: in March/April and October/November the US, UK and Australia change clocks on different Sundays, so a standing meeting can move by an hour for a week or more.
- Remember the date: Monday morning in Sydney is still Sunday in the Americas, so “Monday” deadlines arrive almost a day earlier there.
Frequently asked questions
What time zone is Sydney in?
Sydney uses Australian Eastern Time (IANA zone Australia/Sydney). In winter it is Australian Eastern Standard Time, AEST, which is UTC+10. During daylight saving, from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, it is Australian Eastern Daylight Time, AEDT, which is UTC+11.
When do the clocks change in Sydney?
Daylight saving starts at 2:00 AM AEST on the first Sunday in October, when clocks jump to 3:00 AM. It ends at 3:00 AM AEDT on the first Sunday in April, when clocks go back to 2:00 AM. The next changes are on April 4, 2027 (back) and October 3, 2027 (forward).
Are Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane on the same time?
Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart share the same time all year. Brisbane is in Queensland, which does not use daylight saving, so Brisbane is one hour behind Sydney from October to April and on the same time from April to October.
How many hours is Sydney ahead of the United States?
Sydney is 14 to 16 hours ahead of New York and 17 to 19 hours ahead of Los Angeles. The exact gap depends on whether each place is on daylight saving time, and because the two countries change clocks in opposite seasons the difference shifts several times a year.
What is the time difference between Sydney and London?
Sydney is 11 hours ahead of London during the northern winter (AEDT vs GMT) and 9 hours ahead during the northern summer (AEST vs BST). For a few weeks in March/April and October the gap is 10 hours, because the UK and Australia change their clocks on different dates.
Why is it already tomorrow in Sydney?
Sydney is so far east of the Americas that its calendar date runs ahead. When it is Monday 9:00 AM in Sydney during AEDT, it is still Sunday 2:00 PM in Los Angeles and Sunday 5:00 PM in New York.
How accurate are the sunrise and sunset times?
They are calculated in your browser with the NOAA solar position equations for the selected city's coordinates and are usually within a minute of official tables. Hills, tall buildings and the sea horizon can shift what you actually see by a few minutes.
