How IST to EST conversion works
IST is UTC+5:30. Eastern time is UTC−5:00 in winter (EST) and UTC−4:00 in summer (EDT). So ET = IST − 10:30 in winter and ET = IST − 9:30 in summer. If the result goes below midnight, the Eastern date is the previous day: 7:00 AM IST on a Tuesday is 8:30 PM EST on Monday. The converter reads the correct US offset for your date from your browser's time zone database, so the March and November changeover weeks are handled for you.
Planning India–US East Coast calls
- India evening = US morning. 7:30 PM IST is 9:00 AM EST or 10:00 AM EDT, the most common slot for daily stand-ups.
- Watch the March and November shifts. When the US moves its clocks, a recurring 9:00 AM ET meeting moves one hour earlier or later in India. In summer it is 6:30 PM IST, in winter 7:30 PM IST.
- Friday evening in India is Friday morning in the US, but a Monday 8:00 AM IST message arrives on Sunday evening Eastern time.
- Label meetings with both times (for example “9:00 AM ET / 7:30 PM IST”) so nobody has to convert.
Frequently asked questions
What is the time difference between IST and EST?
India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of Eastern Standard Time (early November to mid-March) and 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of Eastern Daylight Time (mid-March to early November). India does not use daylight saving time, so the gap changes only when the US changes its clocks.
How do I convert IST to EST?
Subtract 10 hours 30 minutes in winter or 9 hours 30 minutes in summer. For example, 8:00 PM IST is 9:30 AM EST in January and 10:30 AM EDT in July.
What is 9 PM IST in EST?
9:00 PM IST is 10:30 AM EST in winter and 11:30 AM EDT in summer, on the same date.
What is 9 AM IST in US Eastern time?
9:00 AM IST is 10:30 PM EST or 11:30 PM EDT on the previous day. Morning in India is the night before on the US East Coast.
What is the best time for a call between India and the US East Coast?
There are no shared 9-to-5 office hours. The usual compromise is India evening and US morning: 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM IST is 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM EST in winter, or 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM EDT in summer.
Does India have daylight saving time?
No. India uses IST (UTC+5:30) all year across the whole country, so only US daylight saving changes the gap.
Why is IST a half-hour offset?
India Standard Time is based on the 82.5° E meridian near Mirzapur, which is 5½ hours ahead of Greenwich. As a result, converted US times always end in :30 when the India time is on the hour.
