The dispute timeline
Investigation deadline = date the bureau receives your letter + 30 days (45 days if you dispute after a free annual report, or if you send more information during the investigation). The tool estimates receipt as the mailing date plus the delivery days you enter. Bureaus must send you written results within 5 business days after completing the investigation, and a free copy of your report if anything changed.
Tips
- Dispute with each bureau that shows the error; they do not share disputes with each other.
- You can also dispute directly with the creditor (the furnisher), which has its own duty to investigate.
- Get free reports from the official annual credit report website to see what each bureau lists.
- Keep copies, certified-mail receipts and the bureau's responses in one folder.
- If a valid dispute is not resolved, you can submit a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a credit bureau have to investigate a dispute?
Under Section 611 of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a bureau generally has 30 days from receiving your dispute to investigate. This can be extended to 45 days if you send additional relevant information during the 30 days, or if you file the dispute after receiving your free annual credit report. The bureau must send you the results within 5 business days after it finishes.
What happens if the information cannot be verified?
If the bureau's reinvestigation finds the item inaccurate or incomplete, or it cannot be verified, the bureau must delete or modify it. The bureau also contacts the company that supplied the information (the furnisher), which must investigate and report the result.
How long can negative items stay on my credit report?
Most negative information, such as late payments, charge-offs and collections, can be reported for seven years, counted from the date of first delinquency. Most bankruptcies can stay for ten years. An item older than that can be disputed as outdated.
Should I dispute online or by mail?
Both are valid. Online is faster; a mailed letter sent by certified mail gives you proof of what you sent and when, which helps if you need to escalate. Some people dispute online and keep a copy of the letter for their records.
What should I enclose?
A copy of a photo ID, proof of your current address, a copy of the report with the disputed item marked, and any documents that support your claim, such as bank statements or a paid-in-full letter. For identity theft, include an FTC identity theft report or a police report. Send copies, never originals.
Is it safe to enter my SSN here?
The tool only asks for the last 4 digits, and it is optional. Nothing is uploaded: the letter is created in your browser. Never post your full Social Security number online.
Does disputing hurt my credit score?
No. Filing a dispute does not lower your score. If an error is removed or corrected, your score may go up, depending on the item.
