Tips for choosing a name
- Say the full name out loud. Use the last name preview: names with different numbers of syllables usually flow better, like Ivy Margaret Johnson rather than Ivy Rose Brown.
- Check the initials. The preview shows them, so you can avoid accidental words or abbreviations.
- Watch repeated sounds. A first name ending in the same sound the last name starts with (Anna Andrews, Max Xavier) can blur together.
- Think about nicknames and how the name looks written down, as well as how it sounds.
- Test spelling and pronunciation. If friends hesitate to say or spell a name, decide whether that bothers you.
- Shortlist together. Each partner can save favorites, then compare the copied lists.

| Long | 8 or more | Penelope, Sebastian, Gwendolyn | Short last names, or a short nickname |
Frequently asked questions
How many names are in the generator?
There are more than 1,700 name and gender combinations: roughly 800 girl names, 780 boy names and 160 unisex names, grouped into 22 origins. Some names belong to more than one origin, such as Hugo (French and German) or Kai (Scandinavian and Hawaiian), and show every tag.
What does the origin mean?
The origin is the language or culture a name is best known from or comes from, such as Hebrew for Hannah or Irish for Saoirse. Many names have travelled between languages, so the tag is a helpful guide rather than a strict history.
Why don't the names show meanings?
Meanings for the same name often differ between sources, so this generator focuses on what can be checked: gender, origin, spelling and length. Use it to build a shortlist, then look up the history of your favorites.
How does the middle name suggestion work?
It picks a name of a compatible gender that starts with a different letter and contrasts in length: short first names get a longer middle name and long first names a shorter one, which usually sounds balanced. Each press of Generate names gives new combinations.
Are my favorites saved?
Yes, in your browser's local storage on this device. They are never uploaded. Copy the list or download it as a .txt file to share it or keep a backup.
Can I find names starting and ending with certain letters?
Yes. Choose a first letter and type one or more letters in Ends with, for example starting with E and ending with "a" gives names like Elena, Elisa and Emilia. Accents are ignored, so typing "e" also matches names ending in é.
