Enter how many shopping carts were created and how many turned into completed purchases. See your abandonment rate, how much revenue those carts represent and how much a recovery campaign or a lower abandonment rate could bring back.

How to use the Cart Abandonment Rate Calculator
Enter carts created (sessions that added at least one item) for a period.
Enter completed purchases from those carts in the same period.
Add your average order value and, optionally, the average value of abandoned carts and your gross margin.
Set a recovery rate and an improvement target to see what you could win back.
Press Calculate for the rate, lost revenue, recovery scenarios and steps.
Abandoned carts = carts created − completed purchases
Revenue left in carts = abandoned carts × average cart value
Recovered revenue = abandoned carts × recovery rate × average cart value
Example: 4,000 carts and 1,200 orders give 2,800 abandoned carts and a 70% abandonment rate. At a $75 average order value that is $210,000 left in carts each month. Recovering 8% of them brings back 224 orders, or $16,800 a month. Cutting abandonment by 5 points (to 65%) adds 200 orders and $15,000 a month without any recovery emails.

Each point of abandonment matters more as the rate climbs: going from 80% to 75% raises orders by a quarter, while going from 50% to 45% raises them by a tenth.
Ways to reduce cart abandonment
Show total cost early, including shipping and taxes, so there are no surprises at checkout.
Offer guest checkout and keep the form short; ask only for what you need to ship the order.
Offer familiar payment options such as cards, digital wallets and pay-later services where suitable.
Make it fast on mobile: large buttons, autofill and address lookup.
Send a short sequence of reminders to shoppers who left an email address, with a direct link back to their cart.
Measure consistently. Use the same definition of a cart and the same date range every time you compare.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate cart abandonment rate?
Cart abandonment rate = (1 − completed purchases ÷ carts created) × 100. If 1,000 carts were created and 300 orders completed, the abandonment rate is (1 − 300 ÷ 1,000) × 100 = 70%.
What is the average cart abandonment rate?
The Baymard Institute, which compiles dozens of published studies, reports an average documented online cart abandonment rate of about 70%. Rates differ by industry, device and how a store counts carts, so compare yourself with your own past results first.
How do I calculate revenue lost to abandoned carts?
Lost revenue = abandoned carts × average cart value. Using the average order value is a simple stand-in, but abandoned carts are often a bit larger or smaller than completed orders, so enter a separate abandoned cart value if you know it.
How much abandoned cart revenue can be recovered?
Only a fraction. Recovery emails and messages bring back a share of abandoned carts that depends on your audience, timing and offer. Enter the recovery rate from your own email platform; the scenario table shows results for several rates.
What is the difference between cart and checkout abandonment?
Cart abandonment counts everyone who added an item but did not buy. Checkout abandonment only counts people who started the checkout form and left. Enter checkouts started instead of carts created to measure checkout abandonment with the same formula.
Why do shoppers abandon carts?
Common reasons include unexpected costs such as shipping or taxes, being asked to create an account, a long or confusing checkout, slow delivery, concerns about payment security and simply browsing without intent to buy yet.
