About the date of Diwali

Diwali falls on Amavasya, the new-moon night of the Hindu month of Kartika (Ashvin in the amanta calendar), so it moves between mid-October and mid-November. The five-day festival runs from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj, and the main celebration with Lakshmi Puja is on the new-moon evening.

Dates are based on Indian Standard Time; communities using different calendars or time zones occasionally celebrate a day apart, so check your local temple calendar.
