Why the date changes every year
Chinese New Year starts on the new moon that begins the first month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar, usually the second new moon after the winter solstice. That is why it moves between 21 January and 20 February. The date is set using China Standard Time (UTC+8), so a few countries may observe it a day apart in rare years.
The celebrations, also called the Spring Festival, traditionally last 15 days and end with the Lantern Festival on the first full moon.
How the countdown is worked out
The target is midnight at the start of Chinese New Year in your device's time zone. The time left is the difference between that moment and now, split into whole days, hours, minutes and seconds. Sleeps are the calendar days from today to the day itself, and weekdays to go count Monday to Friday dates from tomorrow up to the day before. On the day itself the page celebrates, and the next day it switches to the following date.
