How the date of Easter is calculated
Easter is a moveable feast. In Western churches it is the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March, a rule that goes back to the early church and is usually linked to the Council of Nicaea in 325. That puts Western Easter between 22 March and 25 April.
This page uses the Anonymous Gregorian algorithm (also called the Meeus/Jones/Butcher method) for Western Easter. Orthodox churches apply the same idea to the older Julian calendar; the result is then converted to the Gregorian calendar (currently by adding 13 days), so Orthodox Easter falls between 4 April and 8 May. Some years the two dates coincide.
Easter traditions
Easter eggs are an ancient symbol of new life; dyeing and decorating eggs is a tradition in many countries, especially in Central and Eastern Europe.
The Easter Bunny who brings eggs comes from German folklore (the Osterhase) and was brought to America by German immigrants.
Egg hunts, egg rolling and hot cross buns are popular in the United Kingdom, Australia and North America.
Holy Week leads up to Easter, with Palm Sunday a week before and Good Friday two days before Easter Sunday.
How the countdown is worked out
The target is midnight at the start of Easter Sunday in your device's time zone. The time left is the difference between that moment and now, split into whole days (86,400 seconds each), then hours, minutes and seconds. Because it uses real elapsed time, a daylight saving change before the day is handled automatically. Sleeps are the calendar days from today to the day itself, and weekdays to go count Monday to Friday dates from tomorrow up to the day before. The day after the holiday, the countdown switches to next year.
Frequently asked questions
When is Easter in 2027?
Western Easter Sunday is on 28 March 2027 and Orthodox Easter on 2 May 2027. In 2026 Western Easter was 5 April and Orthodox Easter 12 April.
Why is Easter on a different date every year?
Easter is tied to the moon: it is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March. Because lunar months do not line up with the calendar, the date moves between 22 March and 25 April.
Why do Western and Orthodox Easter fall on different days?
Orthodox churches calculate Easter with the Julian calendar, which is now 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar, and with slightly different lunar tables. The dates sometimes match, as in 2025.
