Why this timer stays accurate
Many online timers count down by subtracting one second every time a setInterval callback runs. Browsers slow those callbacks down in background tabs (often to once per second or even once per minute), so such timers drift and can finish late. This timer stores the exact moment the countdown will end and, on every update, calculates remaining time = end time − current time from the system's monotonic clock. Even if updates are delayed, the next one shows the correct value, and a separate one-shot timer fires the alarm at the end time.
Pausing saves the remaining time; resuming sets a new end time of now + remaining. The +1 min and −1 min buttons simply move the end time.

Frequently asked questions
How do I set a timer for 5 minutes?
Just press Start or the Space bar. The timer is already set to 5:00, counts down to 0:00 and then plays an alarm until you press Stop alarm.
Will the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. The countdown is based on the system clock, not on counting timer ticks, so it stays accurate when the tab is in the background or the browser throttles it. The remaining time is also shown in the tab title. Keep the tab open, and make sure your device does not go to sleep.
Why can't I hear the alarm?
Check that your device is not muted, the volume slider is up and the browser tab is not muted. Press Play test sound to try it. Browsers only allow sound after you have interacted with the page, which pressing Start does.
How long is 5 minutes in seconds?
5 minutes is 300 seconds, or 300,000 milliseconds. It is one twelfth of an hour (0.0833 hours).
What can I do in 5 minutes?
Five minutes is enough for a short break, a quick tidy-up, a plank or stretching routine, a short meditation, steeping most black teas (3–5 minutes) or timing a quick classroom activity or presentation.
Can I get a notification when the time is up?
Yes. Tick Notify me when time's up and allow notifications when your browser asks. You will see a system notification even if the browser is minimised, as long as the tab stays open.
What are the keyboard shortcuts?
Space starts, pauses and resumes the timer (and stops the alarm), R resets it, and F switches fullscreen on and off. Esc also leaves fullscreen.
