How the countdown is calculated
The target is midnight (00:00:00) on 1 January of next year in your device's time zone. The time left is simply that moment minus the current time, broken into whole days (86,400 seconds), hours (3,600 seconds), minutes and seconds. For example, at 18:30 on 20 December there are 11 days, 5 hours and 30 minutes left: 11 full days to 18:30 on 31 December, then 5 hours 30 minutes to midnight.
Year progress uses the same idea: if 291.5 days of a 365-day year have passed, the year is 291.5 ÷ 365 = 79.86% complete. Leap years such as 2028 have 366 days.
