How the video is made
Each frame is drawn on an HTML canvas from the exact elapsed time, so the number shown is always ceil(length − elapsed): a 10 second countdown shows 10 for the first second and 1 for the last, then the end text at exactly 10.0 s. The browser's MediaRecorder captures the canvas at the chosen frame rate and, when sound is on, mixes in beeps generated with the Web Audio API at the start of each second. The bit rate is set from the frame size (about 2–12 Mbit/s), so a 30 second 1080p clip is usually 10–40 MB.
Tips
Keep the tab in front. Browsers throttle hidden tabs, which can make the recording stutter.
Use the hold. A 1–2 second hold on the end text gives you room to cut to the next scene in a video editor.
Want a silent clip for an editor? Choose Silent and add your own music later.
Need a thumbnail? Move the slider to any moment and use Download frame (PNG).
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to make the video?
The countdown is recorded in real time, so the video takes as long to create as it is long: a 30 second countdown with a 1 second hold takes about 31 seconds. Keep the tab visible while it records, because browsers slow down hidden tabs.
Will I get an MP4 or a WebM file?
That depends on your browser. Safari and recent versions of Chrome and Edge can record MP4 (H.264) directly, while Firefox and older Chromium versions record WebM. The File format list only shows the formats your browser supports. If you need MP4 and only WebM is offered, convert the file with a WebM to MP4 converter.
What is a film leader countdown?
Film leader is the strip at the start of a film reel that projectionists used to line up the picture. Its countdown shows large numbers inside circles with a sweeping hand that completes one turn per second, plus crosshairs. The film leader style recreates that look with grain, dust and flicker.
Can I make a vertical countdown for Reels, Shorts or TikTok?
Yes. Choose 1080 × 1920 (vertical) as the size. The layout adapts to the narrow frame, and square 1080 × 1080 is also available for feeds.
Does the video have sound?
If Sound is set to anything other than Silent, beeps are mixed into the video's audio track: a short beep each second (or only in the last 5 seconds) and a longer tone when the countdown reaches zero. Choose Silent for a video without audio.
Why does my WebM video not show its length in some players?
Browser-recorded WebM files often do not store the total duration in the file header, so some players show the length only after playing it once. The video itself is complete. Re-saving it with a video converter adds the duration.
Is it free and private?
Yes. Everything is drawn on a canvas and recorded by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, there is no watermark and no sign-up.
