How the final seconds are timed
A one minute countdown is short enough that small errors are noticeable, so this timer never "counts" seconds. When you press Start it stores the end moment (now + 60,000 ms) and every update shows end moment − current time, rounded up to the next whole second, so the display reads 1:00 at the start and only shows 0:00 when the time has really run out. In the last 10 seconds it rounds up to the next tenth instead (9.9, 9.8 … 0.1).
The 3-2-1 beeps are triggered the moment the remaining time drops to 3, 2 and 1 whole seconds, and the alarm itself fires from a one-shot timer set to the end moment. Pausing saves the exact remaining time, so resuming loses nothing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I start a 1 minute timer?
The timer is already set to 1:00. Press Start or the Space bar and it counts down 60 seconds, then plays an alarm until you stop it.
Is 1 minute exactly 60 seconds?
Yes. One minute is 60 seconds, or 60,000 milliseconds, and one sixtieth of an hour. (Very rarely a minute in UTC contains a leap second, but that has no effect on a countdown timer.)
What are the 3-2-1 beeps?
With Beep at 3, 2, 1 seconds left switched on, the timer plays a short tick at 3 and 2 seconds left and a higher tick at 1 second, so you know the end is coming without watching the screen. Untick the box to turn them off.
Why does the display show decimals at the end?
During the final 10 seconds the timer shows tenths of a second (for example 4.7) so you can see exactly how close you are to zero. Untick Show tenths in the final 10 seconds if you prefer the classic 0:04 style.
Is the timer accurate?
Yes. It records the moment the countdown should end and always calculates the time left from the system clock instead of counting interval ticks, so it does not drift or slow down in a background tab.
What can I time with a 60 second timer?
Planks and other exercise intervals, every-minute-on-the-minute (EMOM) workouts, one minute speeches and elevator pitches, classroom reading-fluency checks and math drills, party games and quick microwave or cooking steps.
