About Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr, the "festival of breaking the fast", is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the month after Ramadan. It begins with a special prayer in the morning and is a time for family visits, new clothes, gifts and charity (Zakat al-Fitr, given before the prayer).
Islamic months begin with the sighting of the new crescent moon, so the actual start can differ by one day from the dates below depending on your country and moon-sighting authority. The dates here are astronomical estimates close to the Umm al-Qura calendar; your local mosque or Islamic centre will confirm the exact day.
How the countdown is worked out
The target is midnight at the start of Eid al-Fitr in your device's time zone. The time left is the difference between that moment and now, split into whole days, hours, minutes and seconds. Sleeps are the calendar days from today to the day itself, and weekdays to go count Monday to Friday dates from tomorrow up to the day before. On the day itself the page celebrates, and the next day it switches to the following date.
