A short history of Thanksgiving

In the United States, Thanksgiving is often traced to the 1621 harvest feast shared by the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag people. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day in 1863, set on the last Thursday of November. In 1941 Congress fixed the date as the fourth Thursday of November, so it always falls between 22 and 28 November.

In Canada, Thanksgiving has been held on the second Monday of October since 1957, closer to the end of the harvest further north. It falls between 8 and 14 October.

How the countdown is worked out

The target is midnight at the start of Thanksgiving in your device's time zone. The time left is the difference between that moment and now, split into whole days (86,400 seconds each), then hours, minutes and seconds. Because it uses real elapsed time, a daylight saving change before the day is handled automatically. Sleeps are the calendar days from today to the day itself, and weekdays to go count Monday to Friday dates from tomorrow up to the day before. The day after the holiday, the countdown switches to next year.
