How to use the Public Holidays by Country
Pick a country from the list; your own country is selected automatically when your browser language includes it.
Choose the year with the arrows or type it in, then press Find holidays if needed.
Filter the list: keep Nationwide holidays only ticked, or untick it to include holidays observed in some regions.
Read the table for each date, weekday and local name, and see which holidays create a long weekend.
Download the ICS file to import the holidays into your calendar, or export CSV for a spreadsheet.
How public holiday dates are set
Every country decides its own public holidays by law or decree. Most follow one of four kinds of rule, which is why some holidays move every year and others never do.
Rule type
How it works
Examples
Fixed date
Same day every year
New Year's Day (Jan 1), Bastille Day (Jul 14), German Unity Day (Oct 3)
Nth weekday
A set weekday in a month
US Labor Day (1st Monday in September), Canadian Thanksgiving (2nd Monday in October)
Follows a lunar or lunisolar calendar, or is declared each year
Lunar New Year, Eid al-Fitr, Diwali, Vesak
Western Easter Sunday falls between March 22 and April 25, so every holiday counted from it moves within a five-week window. Orthodox countries count Easter on the Julian calendar, which usually puts it one to five weeks later.
Weekends, substitutes and bridge days
Substitute days: in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and some other countries, a holiday that lands on a weekend gives a weekday off instead. In much of continental Europe a weekend holiday is simply lost.
Long weekends: a holiday on a Monday or Friday gives a three-day weekend. The counter above shows how many there are in the year you chose.
Bridge days: when a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many people take the Monday or Friday off to make a four-day break. Use the PTO Holiday Optimizer to plan them.
Tips for international teams and travel
Check both ends: a payment or shipment between two countries can be delayed by a holiday in either one.
Regional holidays matter: Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Canada have many holidays that apply in only some regions. Untick the nationwide filter when you plan work with a specific city.
Import once a year: download the ICS file for each country you work with so holidays appear next to your meetings.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the holiday data come from?
Holidays are loaded from Nager.Date, a free and open public holiday API (date.nager.at) that covers more than 100 countries. The request contains only the country code and year. If the service cannot be reached, a built-in list calculated from standard rules is shown for seven countries.
What is the difference between nationwide and regional holidays?
Nationwide holidays apply throughout the country. Regional holidays apply only in certain states, provinces, cantons or regions, for example Saint Patrick's Day in Northern Ireland or Corpus Christi in some German states. Untick Nationwide holidays only to see them, with the regions listed.
Are substitute or observed days included?
When the database includes them, yes; many countries list substitute days as separate holidays. Rules differ: the UK moves bank holidays that fall on a weekend to the next weekday, while some countries do not move holidays at all. The offline fallback list does not include substitute days.
How do I add public holidays to Google Calendar?
Click Download ICS calendar, then in Google Calendar open Settings, Import & export, and import the file into the calendar you choose. In Outlook use File, Open & Export, Import/Export; on a Mac or iPhone, open the file with Calendar. Each holiday is an all-day event.
Why are some countries missing?
The list shows the countries covered by the open database. Countries with mostly religious or lunar holidays whose dates are set by announcement each year may not be included. For those, check the government's official holiday announcement.
Are bank holidays the same as public holidays?
Often but not always. In the UK the official term is bank holiday. In other countries banks may close on extra days, or some public holidays may be optional for private employers. The tag next to a holiday shows types such as Bank, Optional or Observance when the database provides them.
Can holiday dates change?
Yes. Governments sometimes add, move or cancel holidays, for example for a coronation, a jubilee or an election. Future years show the dates expected under the current rules; check official sources for legal, payroll or travel decisions.
