Is the market open on a specific date?
Dates follow the published NYSE holiday rules, which Nasdaq also uses. Regular hours are 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET; early-close days end at 1:00 pm ET. Exchanges can add special closures, so confirm unusual dates with the exchange.

How to use the Stock Market Holidays Calendar
Look at the top card for the next market holiday or early close and whether the market is open today.
Choose the first year and how many years to show; the current and next year are shown by default.
Untick early closes or past dates if you only want the remaining full-day closures.
Check a single date with the date checker below the calendars.
Press Download calendar (.ics) to import the dates into Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar, or download a CSV.

When a holiday lands on a Sunday the market closes on Monday; when it lands on a Saturday the market closes on Friday, except for New Year's Day, because closing on December 31 would cut the last trading day of the year (that happened in 2022, when the market stayed open on Friday, December 31, 2021).
Stock market vs bank and bond market holidays
Good Friday: stock exchanges are closed, but it is not a federal holiday, so banks and the Federal Reserve are open.
Columbus Day and Veterans Day: stock exchanges are open, but banks and usually the US bond market are closed.
Early closes: stocks stop regular trading at 1:00 pm ET; listed options and bond markets follow their own, often similar, early schedules.
Settlement: US stock trades settle one business day after the trade (T+1). A holiday right after a sale delays when the cash settles.
Tips for planning around market holidays
Volume is often thin on early-close days and around Christmas and New Year, which can mean wider bid-ask spreads.
Scheduled transfers and automatic investments that fall on a market holiday usually execute on the next trading day.
Options and futures expirations move when the usual day is a holiday; for example, monthly options expire on Thursday when the third Friday is Good Friday.
Use the .ics file so the closures appear next to your other plans and you don't schedule trades for a day the market is shut.
Frequently asked questions
What holidays is the stock market closed for?
The NYSE and Nasdaq close for ten holidays a year: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday (Presidents Day), Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Juneteenth was added in 2022.
Is the stock market open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day?
Yes. The stock market stays open on Columbus Day (Indigenous Peoples' Day) and Veterans Day, even though banks and the bond market are usually closed. The stock market closes on Good Friday, which is not a federal holiday.
What happens when a market holiday falls on a weekend?
If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the market closes the following Monday. If it falls on a Saturday, the market usually closes the Friday before. The exception is New Year's Day on a Saturday: the market stays open on the preceding Friday because it is the last trading day of the year.
When does the stock market close early?
On early-close days regular trading ends at 1:00 pm Eastern Time instead of 4:00 pm. This happens on the day after Thanksgiving, on Christmas Eve when it falls Monday to Thursday, and on July 3 when Independence Day falls Tuesday to Friday.
How many trading days are in a year?
Usually 250 to 253. A year has about 260 or 261 weekdays, minus around nine or ten weekday holidays. The calculator shows the exact count for each year, based on the holiday rules.
Are Nasdaq and NYSE holidays the same?
Yes. Nasdaq follows the same holiday schedule and early closes as the New York Stock Exchange, so one calendar covers both US stock exchanges.
How do I add stock market holidays to my calendar?
Press Download calendar (.ics) and open the file, or import it in Google Calendar (Settings > Import & export), Outlook or Apple Calendar. Each closure and early close is added as an all-day event.
