How the conversion works
The converter uses your browser's built-in Intl.DateTimeFormat with the islamic-umalqura (or tabular) calendar, the same data used by operating systems. For Hijri → Gregorian it estimates the day count since 1 Muharram 1 AH (19 July 622 in the proleptic Gregorian calendar), using an average lunar year of 354.367 days and month of 29.53 days, then checks nearby days until the exact Hijri date matches.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Hijri calendar?
The Hijri or Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months of 29 or 30 days, about 354 or 355 days a year. Year 1 AH began in 622 CE, the year of the Prophet Muhammad's migration (Hijra) from Mecca to Medina.
Why can the Hijri date differ by a day from my local mosque?
Many communities begin each month when the new crescent moon is actually sighted, which can be a day earlier or later than a calculated calendar. The Umm al-Qura calendar is calculated astronomically and is the official calendar of Saudi Arabia.
What is the difference between Umm al-Qura and the tabular calendar?
Umm al-Qura is based on astronomical calculations for Mecca. The tabular (civil) calendar uses a fixed rule of 30-year cycles with 11 leap years, so months alternate 30 and 29 days. The two can differ by a day or two.
How many days are in a Hijri year?
A common Hijri year has 354 days and a leap year 355 days. Because it is about 11 days shorter than the 365-day solar year, Islamic months and holidays move about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.
How do I roughly convert a Gregorian year to a Hijri year?
A quick approximation is AH ≈ (CE − 622) × 33 ÷ 32. For 2026 that gives about 1447 to 1448 AH, depending on the time of year. Use the converter for an exact day.
