US federal holidays and how their dates are set
Federal holidays are set by law in 5 U.S.C. 6103. Six fall on a fixed date and five on a set weekday, so their dates move each year.

Observed holidays and long weekends
When a fixed-date holiday lands on a weekend, federal employees get the nearest weekday off: Saturday holidays move to Friday, Sunday holidays move to Monday. The five Monday holidays always give a three-day weekend, and Thanksgiving often creates a four-day weekend for people who also take Black Friday off. The “create a 3-day weekend” count above includes every federal day off that lands on a Monday or Friday.
Some years have quirks. When New Year’s Day is a Saturday, its observed day off is Friday, December 31 of the year before, so that year shows an extra observed day in December. Before 1978, Veterans Day was held on the fourth Monday in October; the calendar uses the rule in force for the year you choose.
Tips for using the holiday list
Payroll and deadlines: federal agencies, the US Postal Service and most banks close on the observed date, so payments and mail due that day usually move to the next business day.
Stock markets differ: NYSE and Nasdaq close on Good Friday but stay open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
State holidays such as Cesar Chavez Day, Patriots’ Day or the day after Thanksgiving vary by state and are not listed; check your state’s calendar.
Religious and cultural holidays other than Easter and Christmas, such as Hanukkah, Diwali or Eid, follow other calendars and are not included here.
Frequently asked questions
How many federal holidays are there in the US?
There are 11 permanent federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Juneteenth became the 11th in 2021. Inauguration Day is an extra holiday every four years for federal employees in the Washington, DC area only.
What happens when a federal holiday falls on a weekend?
For most federal employees, a holiday on a Saturday is observed on the preceding Friday and a holiday on a Sunday is observed on the following Monday. That is why New Year's Day on a Saturday is observed on Friday, December 31 of the previous year.
Are private employers required to give federal holidays off?
No. Federal holidays apply to federal government employees and federal offices. Private employers choose their own paid holidays, and many give fewer than 11. Banks usually follow the Federal Reserve holiday schedule, and stock markets have their own calendar.
Which federal holidays are always on a Monday?
Five: Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday in January), Washington's Birthday (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Labor Day (first Monday in September) and Columbus Day (second Monday in October). Three of them were moved to Mondays by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act from 1971. Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November.
Is Presidents Day the official name?
The federal name is still Washington's Birthday. Many states, retailers and calendars call it Presidents Day. It is the third Monday in February, so it never falls on Washington's actual birthday, February 22.
How do I add US holidays to Google Calendar or Outlook?
Click Download ICS calendar, then import the file: in Google Calendar use Settings, Import & export; in Outlook use File, Open & Export, Import/Export; on a Mac, open the file with Calendar. Each holiday is an all-day event, and observed days off are added as separate events.
How is the date of Easter worked out?
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21, so it falls between March 22 and April 25. This calendar uses the standard Gregorian algorithm to calculate it for any year. Good Friday is two days earlier.
