Many countries refuse entry, and airlines refuse boarding, if your passport expires too soon after your trip. Enter your passport's expiration date and your travel dates to check the 3-month, 6-month and duration-of-stay rules for popular destinations and see when you should renew.

How the check works
The tool takes the date the rule counts from (your arrival or departure), adds the required months or days, and compares the result with your passport's expiration date. For example, arriving in Thailand on March 10 requires a passport valid until at least September 10. If the passport expires on or after that date the trip passes; a margin of less than 30 days is flagged because a delayed flight or longer stay could break the rule. Months are added on the calendar, so August 31 plus 6 months is the last day of February.
Tips to avoid passport problems
Check transit countries too. A connection can apply its own rule, especially if you leave the airport.
Count blank pages. Some countries need one or two empty visa pages for entry stamps.
Renew early. Aim for about 9 months before expiration so the 6-month rule never catches you out.
Book with the right name. The name on your ticket must match your passport; renew after a legal name change.
Keep a copy. Store a photo of your passport's photo page separately from the passport while traveling.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 6-month passport rule?
Many countries, including China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, India and the United Arab Emirates, require your passport to be valid for at least six months after the date you arrive. If it expires sooner you can be refused entry, and airlines often refuse boarding before you even leave.
How long must my passport be valid for Europe?
For the Schengen Area, which includes most of the European Union plus Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen Area and must have been issued within the previous 10 years. The UK and Ireland are not in Schengen and generally only require the passport to be valid for your stay.
Does a passport have to be valid for 6 months to go to Mexico or Canada?
For US citizens, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan and Australia generally require the passport to be valid for the whole length of your stay rather than 6 months beyond it. Airlines and transit countries may still apply stricter rules, so a little extra validity is a good idea.
When should I renew my passport?
The US State Department recommends renewing about nine months before your passport expires, because many countries require six months of validity and processing plus mailing can take several weeks. This tool shows that date and lets you set your own processing time.
Is the 6 months counted from arrival or departure?
It depends on the country. Most 6-month countries count from the date you arrive, but some, such as Israel and the Philippines, count from the date you leave, and Schengen counts 3 months from the date you leave. The tool applies the right starting date for each destination.
Are these passport rules the same for every nationality?
No. The rules here are the general requirements published for US passport holders in 2026. Requirements can differ for other nationalities, visa holders, residents and cruise passengers, and countries change them, so always confirm with the destination's embassy or official government website before you travel.
