Mute Video
Take the sound off any video. Remove the audio track completely or replace it with silence, keep the original resolution and frame rate, and save the silent copy without uploading your file.
Your silent video
How to use the Mute Video
- Choose a video by dropping it into the box or clicking to browse. The tool shows its size, length and audio track.
- Pick what happens to the sound: remove the audio track, or replace it with silence.
- Optionally adjust the frame rate, resolution and quality.
- Press Mute & export video and wait while the silent copy is recorded.
- Play the preview to check it, then press Download video.
When to mute a video
- Background noise or wind ruins an otherwise good clip, and you plan to add music or a voice-over later.
- Private conversations were picked up in a clip you want to share publicly.
- Copyrighted music playing in the background could get a social media upload blocked or muted.
- Silent loops for websites, presentations and digital signage, where autoplaying video must have no sound.
- Smaller files: an audio track at 128 kbps adds about 1 MB per minute.
Common audio tracks in video files
| Codec | Usually found in | Typical bitrate | Size per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAC | MP4 and MOV from phones, cameras and screen recorders | 128–256 kbps | 0.9–1.9 MB |
| Opus | WebM, browser and video-call recordings | 64–160 kbps | 0.5–1.2 MB |
| Vorbis | Older WebM and Ogg files | 96–192 kbps | 0.7–1.4 MB |
| AC-3 / E-AC-3 | Movies and TV recordings (MKV, MP4) | 384–640 kbps | 2.8–4.7 MB |
Size per minute = bitrate × 60 ÷ 8. For example, 128 kbps × 60 s ÷ 8 = 960 KB, close to 1 MB for every minute of sound.
Tips for the best result
Keep Match original quality to get a file of similar size and sharpness to the source. If you only need a silent clip for a website background, choose 720p and Standard quality for a much smaller file. To also cut the clip shorter, trim it first and then mute the trimmed copy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove the sound from a video?
Load the video, leave Remove the audio track selected and press Mute & export video. The tool records a new copy of the picture without any sound and lets you download it.
What is the difference between removing the audio and replacing it with silence?
Removing the audio leaves the file with no sound track at all, which gives the smallest file. Replacing it with silence adds a silent track, which some editing apps, players and social networks expect to find.
What format is the muted video?
The silent copy is saved as WebM with VP9 or VP8 video, which plays in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, VLC and most editors and uploads to YouTube and most social sites. Browsers that can't record WebM, such as some Safari versions, produce an MP4 instead.
Why does muting take as long as the video?
Your browser re-records the video frame by frame in real time with its built-in MediaRecorder, so a 2-minute clip takes about 2 minutes. Keep the tab open and visible during the export, because browsers slow down hidden tabs.
Will the video quality change?
The picture is re-encoded, so there is a small loss. Match original keeps the bitrate close to the source; choose High or Very high for the best quality, or Small for a compact file.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is opened and processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so it also works for private recordings.
