Turn a landscape or vertical video into a 1:1 square without cutting anything off. Fill the empty space with a blurred copy of the video, a solid color or your own image, or crop to fill the whole square, then export a 1080×1080 MP4 for the Instagram feed.

How to use the Square Video Maker
Choose a video by dropping it on the box, or press Try a sample clip.
Pick Fit or Crop to fill. Fit keeps the whole picture; Crop to fill zooms until the square is covered.
Choose the background for the empty space: blurred video, a solid color or an image you upload.
Adjust scale and position with the sliders or by dragging the preview.
Press Create square video, check the result and press Download MP4.
How much of the square your video covers
When a video is fitted into a square, its longest side becomes the side of the square. The share of the square covered by the picture is the short side divided by the long side; the rest is background. Crop to fill does the opposite: the short side becomes the side of the square and the same share of the picture is kept.

Choosing a background
Blurred video is the most popular choice for music clips, travel footage and gameplay. A blur of 25-45 with brightness at 60-80% keeps the fill calm.
Solid color suits brand content, tutorials and clips where you will add captions later; white or cream looks clean in a feed grid.
Image lets you place the video on a branded card, a texture or a photo. The image is scaled to cover the square and centered.
In between: a scale of 120-140% crops a little from the sides of a 16:9 clip and makes the subject bigger while keeping thin background bands.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a video square without cropping it?
Choose Fit whole video. The video is scaled so its longest side matches the square, so a 16:9 clip fills the width and leaves bands above and below. Those bands are filled with a blurred copy of the video, a color or an image, and nothing from the original picture is lost.
What size should a square Instagram video be?
Instagram recommends 1080 × 1080 pixels for square (1:1) feed videos. The tool exports exactly that size by default, plus 720 × 720 and 480 × 480 for smaller files. Instagram also accepts 4:5 portrait posts, which take up more of the screen in the feed.
How much of the square does a 16:9 video fill?
A 16:9 video fitted into a square uses the full width and 9/16 of the height, so it covers 56.25% of the square; the other 43.75% is background. A 4:3 video covers 75%, and a 9:16 vertical video also covers 56.25%, with bands on the left and right.
What does Crop to fill do?
It scales the video until the shortest side matches the square, so there is no background at all. For a 16:9 video that means a scale of about 178% and only the central 56% of the width is kept. Drag the preview to choose which part stays in frame.
Why use a blurred background instead of black bars?
A blurred, slightly darkened copy of the same video matches the colors of the clip, so the square looks finished rather than letterboxed. The sharp video in the middle stands out against the soft copy behind it.
What format is the downloaded file?
An MP4 file. Most browsers encode H.264 video with AAC sound, which Instagram, Facebook, X and WhatsApp accept. Some browsers produce VP9 or Opus inside MP4; if an app rejects it, run it through a video converter first.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Everything happens on your device with your browser's built-in video tools. The video is never sent to a server and no watermark is added.
