How to use the Online Video Player
Open a video: drop one or more video files on the player or press Choose videos.
Set the speed with the preset buttons or the slider, or press [ and ] on the keyboard.
Loop a section: press Set A at the start and Set B at the end (or the A and B keys). Playback repeats between them until you clear the loop.
Add subtitles with Load subtitles (SRT or VTT). If they are early or late, shift them with the delay buttons or the G and H keys.
Zoom in with the zoom slider or Z, then drag the picture to look at details. Press F for fullscreen.
Which speed should I use?
Speed
Good for
0.25x to 0.5x
Learning dance steps, sports technique, fast guitar or piano passages, checking a detail in fast action
0.75x
Following a language lesson or a fast speaker, copying a recipe or tutorial step by step
1.25x to 1.5x
Lectures, webinars and talks: most people still understand speech comfortably
1.75x to 2x
Reviewing material you have already seen, skimming long recordings
3x to 4x
Scanning security or dashcam footage, time-lapse style review (sound is usually muted by the browser above about 4x)
Keep pitch uses the browser's time-stretching so voices keep their natural pitch at any speed. Turn it off if you want the classic tape effect, where slower is lower and faster is higher.
Using the A-B loop to practise
Repeating a short section is the fastest way to learn something from a video. Mark the section with A and B, slow it down to 0.5x or 0.75x until you can follow every detail, then raise the speed step by step back to 1x. The loop keeps running when you change speed, zoom in or switch subtitles on, so you can stay focused on the part you are practising.
Subtitle files: SRT and WebVTT
An SRT file is a numbered list of cues, each with a start and end time written as 00:01:02,500 --> 00:01:05,000 followed by the text. WebVTT (.vtt) starts with the line WEBVTT and uses a dot before the milliseconds. This player reads both, keeps italic, bold and underline formatting and removes other styling tags. To create or fix a subtitle file, use the Subtitle Editor; to burn subtitles permanently into the picture, use Add Subtitles to Video.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The player opens the file with your browser's built-in video decoder directly from your disk. Nothing is sent to a server, so it works with private videos and even without an internet connection once the page has loaded.
Which video formats can it play?
Any format your browser can decode. MP4 (H.264 or H.265 where supported), WebM (VP8, VP9, AV1) and most MOV files from phones play in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Older formats such as AVI, WMV or FLV are usually not supported by browsers; convert them to MP4 first.
How do I play a video in slow motion?
Choose 0.25x, 0.5x or 0.75x, drag the speed slider or press [ to slow down by 0.25x. Turn on Keep pitch to stop voices sounding deeper. For analysing movement one frame at a time, use the frame step buttons or the comma and period keys.
How does the A-B loop work?
Press Set A at the moment the section starts and Set B where it ends. The section is highlighted on the progress bar and playback jumps back to A every time it reaches B. You can type exact times in the A and B boxes. Press Clear loop or X to play normally again.
My subtitles are out of sync. How do I fix them?
Use the subtitle delay buttons: plus makes subtitles appear later, minus earlier, in 0.1 second steps (keys G and H). The delay is applied live without changing your file. If the text shows strange characters, the player automatically retries the file with Windows-1252 encoding.
Does it remember where I stopped?
Yes. For each file (identified by name and size) the player saves your position in this browser and offers to resume from there the next time you open the same video. Nothing about the video leaves your device.
What are the keyboard shortcuts?
Space or K play and pause, left and right arrows skip 5 seconds, J and L skip 10 seconds, up and down change volume, M mutes, F toggles fullscreen, comma and period step one frame, [ and ] change speed, A and B set the loop, X clears it, C toggles subtitles and 0 to 9 jump to 0 to 90% of the video. The full list is under the player.
