Estimate how much data your streaming habits use per day, week and month: video in SD, HD or 4K, music from 96 kbps to lossless, and video calls. Add your plan's data cap to see how much is left, or the day you would run out.

How to use the Streaming Data Usage Calculator
Pick a video quality and enter how many hours a day you watch.
Set your music quality and hours, then your video call quality and hours.
Add any other streaming in GB per hour if you know its rate (optional).
Enter days, people and your data cap (0 if your plan is unlimited).
Press Calculate (it also updates live) to see your monthly total, cap status and breakdown.
How streaming data usage is calculated
Every stream has an average bitrate. Multiply it by the time you stream to get the data used:
GB per hour = bitrate (Mbps) × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 = Mbps × 0.45 Monthly GB = Σ (GB per hour × hours per day) × people × days
Example: two hours of Full HD video (3 GB/h), one hour of music at 160 kbps (0.072 GB/h) and 30 minutes of HD video calls (1.1 GB/h) a day is 6 + 0.072 + 0.55 = 6.62 GB per day, or about 199 GB in a 30-day month. On a 50 GB plan that cap would run out on day 8.
The calculator uses decimal units (1 GB = 1,000 MB), the same units carriers and internet providers use for data caps.

Tips to stay under a data cap
Set mobile quality separately. Most video and music apps let you choose a lower quality on cellular data while keeping HD or 4K on Wi-Fi.
Download on Wi-Fi. Offline episodes and playlists use no mobile data when you play them later.
Watch the big items. One hour of 4K video uses about as much data as 50 hours of 320 kbps music, so video quality is almost always the biggest lever.
Count the whole household. Home internet caps are shared by every TV, console and phone; use the people / screens field to estimate a family's total.
Check mid-month. Compare your provider's usage meter with the "cap reached on" day shown here and adjust before you go over.
Frequently asked questions
How much data does streaming video use per hour?
Typical figures published by major streaming services are about 0.3 GB per hour on a data-saver setting, 0.7 GB for standard definition, up to about 3 GB for Full HD 1080p and up to about 7 GB for 4K Ultra HD. Actual use depends on the service, the codec, the device and how much motion is in the show.
How do you convert a bitrate to GB per hour?
GB per hour = Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 = Mbps × 0.45. A 5 Mbps stream uses about 2.25 GB per hour, and a 15.6 Mbps 4K stream about 7 GB per hour. For audio in kbps, multiply by 0.45 to get MB per hour: 320 kbps is about 144 MB per hour.
How much data does music streaming use?
Much less than video. At 96 kbps an hour uses about 43 MB, at 160 kbps about 72 MB and at 320 kbps about 144 MB. CD-quality lossless (FLAC, roughly 800–1,100 kbps) uses around 0.4–0.5 GB per hour, and hi-res lossless can use 1–2 GB or more per hour.
How much data does a video call use?
An audio-only call uses only about 30–50 MB per hour. Video calls send and receive video at the same time: roughly 0.5 GB per hour for standard quality, about 1 GB for HD 720p and 2.5 GB or more for 1080p. Group calls with many video tiles can use more download data.
Is a 50 GB data plan enough for streaming?
50 GB covers about 16 hours of Full HD 1080p video, about 70 hours of SD video, or roughly 340 hours of music at 320 kbps in a month. If you watch two hours of HD video every day (about 180 GB a month), you would need a larger plan or to lower the quality on mobile data.
How can I reduce streaming data usage?
Lower the video quality on mobile networks (SD instead of HD saves over 75%), download shows and playlists on Wi-Fi for offline viewing, turn off autoplay of the next episode, use the data-saver mode in apps, and turn off your own camera on video calls when it is not needed.
Why is my real usage different from the estimate?
Streaming apps use adaptive bitrate, switching quality with your connection speed and screen size, so a phone may never reach full 1080p. Background downloads, app updates, ads and other devices on the same plan also count toward your cap. Compare the estimate with the usage meter in your phone settings or your provider's account page.
