Video size per minute
The file size depends mostly on the video bitrate: size per minute ≈ (video bitrate + audio bitrate) × 60 ÷ 8. This recorder asks the browser for about 2.5 Mbps at 480p, 5 Mbps at 720p and 8 Mbps at 1080p, plus 128 kbps for sound. Browsers adjust the real bitrate to the scene, so a still talking head is often smaller and lots of movement can be a bit larger.
| Quality | Resolution | Target bitrate | About per minute | 10 minutes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 480p | 854 × 480 | 2.5 Mbps | 20 MB | 197 MB |
| 720p HD | 1280 × 720 | 5 Mbps | 38 MB | 385 MB |
| 1080p Full HD | 1920 × 1080 | 8 Mbps | 61 MB | 610 MB |
If your camera cannot deliver the chosen resolution, the browser picks the closest one it supports. The badge in the corner of the preview always shows the real resolution and frame rate.
Tips for a better webcam video
- Light from the front. Face a window or a lamp. Light behind you turns you into a silhouette and makes the image grainy.
- Camera at eye level. Put the laptop on a few books so the camera looks straight at you, not up your nose.
- Check the mic level. When you speak normally, the meter should reach about two thirds. If it hits the red end, move further from the microphone.
- Use a headset or external mic for interviews and tutorials. Pick it in the Microphone list.
- Do several takes. Each take is kept until you close the tab, so you can record a few and download only the best one.
WebM or MP4?
Browsers record in the format they support natively. Chrome, Edge and Firefox record WebM, an open format that plays in those browsers, VLC, YouTube, and editors like DaVinci Resolve and Shotcut. Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad records MP4 with H.264, which plays almost everywhere. If you need an MP4 from Chrome, upload the WebM to YouTube or convert it with a desktop tool such as HandBrake or VLC.
Frequently asked questions
How do I record a video with my webcam online?
Press Start camera, allow access to your camera and microphone, then press Record. When you are done, press Stop and Download. The video is recorded by your browser and saved straight to your device.
Is the video uploaded to a server?
No. The recording is made with your browser's built-in MediaRecorder and stays in your device's memory until you download it. Nothing is sent over the internet. Takes disappear when you close the page, so download the ones you want.
What format are the videos saved in?
Chrome, Edge and Firefox save WebM video (VP9 or VP8 with Opus audio), which plays in those browsers, VLC and most editors. Safari saves MP4 (H.264 with AAC audio). You can convert WebM to MP4 with a free video converter if you need it.
Why can't the site access my camera?
Your browser may have blocked access. Click the camera icon or the padlock in the address bar, allow the camera and microphone and press Start camera again. Also close other apps that use the camera, such as Zoom or Teams, because a camera can often be used by only one app at a time.
Is the recording mirrored?
No. Mirror preview only flips what you see on screen, like a bathroom mirror, which makes it easier to frame yourself. The saved video shows you the way other people see you, so text in the background reads normally.
How long can I record?
There is no fixed limit. The video is kept in memory while you record, so very long recordings at 1080p can use a lot of RAM. At 720p expect roughly 30 to 40 MB per minute.
Can I record on my phone?
Yes, in Chrome on Android and in Safari on iPhone and iPad. Pick the front or back camera in the Camera list. Keep the page open and the screen on while recording.
